Hello
I am looking for a Jonathan Matthews or Mathews . Jonathan was a soldier in Butlers Rangers and was granted land in Niagara. I have found him listed "Mathews, Jonathan.... Home District, Soldier Butler's Rangers, Niagara stamped book, S.P.L.N. 1786, page 210". I do not know exactly where he was granted land but my ancestors have been traced back to Bertie township in Welland county, Ontario namely a Jedah or Jodiah Mathews born around 1805 in Bertie township.
1851 Census Bertie Township Page 6 lists the following "Mathews"
Jodiah (Shoemaker) born in BertieTwp. No religious affiliation - Age 48
Ann born in Bertie Age 36
Children:
Emelia V. age 14 female
Alexnder age 13 male
Chas. age 11 male
Catherine age 9 female
John age 5 male
Benj'n age 2 male
I am having trouble connecting to Jonathan. If he was granted land in Niagara peninsula would his children also have been granted land there also? I need to find some kind of connection to continue this line.
.
