Frederick:
It's quite irrelevant to your ancesor, but J Bty RHA fought at Sidi Rezegh (just before Alamein), distinguished itself and is now J (Sidi Rezegh) Bty. What they are doing now I don't know, but in 1953 they were in Munsterlager, in Germany

Dear Sir/Madam,

I ahve not tried it but I understand that hte Imperial War Museum is excellent at tracking down details of past soldiers. Why not ask what their service is?

Arthur doesn’t appear to have been recalled for the Boer War and with such short service never claimed a pension.
There are only 2 WWI Medal Index Cards for the name Arthur Danson, but quite a few more births registered with the name for males who could have served in WWI.

Dear Jeff,

Thank you for all that information. I don't know where you found it. I also am unfamiliar with "threads" so I apologise. I imagine I picked up someone else working on the military background of their ancestors.

I am most grateful to you for filling in a lot of gaps. I hope, one day that I will be able to do the same for someone also.

Yours

Janet

Does anyone know where you could find records of soldiers that were in RHA in 1840s? I have a marriage record for a William Patterson in Ireland in 1843 and it states he was a private in RHA. I cant find a service record for him and suspect that he didnt stay in the army.
I do know that he had a daughter in Woolwich in 1851 which makes me think he was posted back to the barracks and his family were living in Plumstead in 1861 but there's no trace of him in any census. I have no other details about him so dont even have an age to go by so was hoping to find a military record that would give me more info.
Any pointers may just save my sanity :)

Hello this is reply for Leslie Shiner, I'm hoping you are still getting mail from here (if you're reading this obviously you are)
In regards to you inquiry about F Puxty.
I believe my family have a photo of him and a banana leaf with a letter written on it to his wife. My mother has often talked about him and I recall he was from Ticehurst
The photo shows him in full uniform and the leaf was sent from the front lines during the Boer War.
I'm currently trying to find a way of preserving this leaf as it's starting to fade.
It's my mother that has the leaf and I will ask her for more detail to confirm that it is him but I have little doubt. If you wish to have a copy of the photo and if I can arrange it, a copy of the leaf it would be my pleasure to do so.
I so hope this has gotten to you.

I have also been researching my grandfather and have found records of campaign medals and award rolls for members of P battery. It is all so difficult to find any information about those serving in the Boer War and my relatives never passed anything down. There is a story though that my grandfather was posted as missing/dead but suddenly turning up giving everyone a near heart attack. He also went to India after that of which I know nothing, and ended up a Chelsea Pensioner for a short while before he died in 1950.
It would be very interesting to find anyone who possibly knew him so if you would like to share some information I would like to hear from you.
