I have heard of Mary joining a wagon train and I have seen where the house used to be. Yes, I have heard that Obe rode with the James gang but not that Mary left because of it. The first robbery at Liberty was in February of 1866. So, they had 4 children after this time; John was born in 1868; Sarah Susan in 1871 and the twins in 1874. So, that theory doesn't mean much.

We have also heard he had 5 wives and families that we know of. He would drift in, then several men would drift in. The women would start cooking in big pots outside. Then a few would drift off and finally Obe would be the last to leave. We heard that John said he would sit on a fence and watch them drift in. He said that they rode the very best horses and had the best saddles and the fanciest guns.

We also heard that he was a chaplain and scout for Quantrill. We've heard he was a scoundrel but then we don't know what all he went through during the Civil War. We heard he was branded on the head and he wore his hat at all times even to the table which was considered bad manners back then. We heard that at a picnic one time, someone knocked his hat off. He bent over and picked it up and told the man, if he ever did that again, he would kill him. Yes, he was definitely "colorful" to say the least.
