Re: NY, NJ and PA Twardowski(s)
In reading your message a few names jumped out at me I am not sure if they are the same or not but, my father was Eugene Twardowski, from Chicago, his parents were Casmier and Mary, siblings were Irene, Martha, and Wally. Although I have some pictures that I have yet to find out who exactly these people are, one says Adolph on it, and a few others mention uncle Stanley's. Please let me know if any of these ring a bell for you.

Re: Name changed around 1900
I have a lovely photo of your Nic Hartman, born Nicolas Twardowski, as a young man. The family story is that the name change allowed him to work in the fur trade.

Re: Twardowski Name change possibly to Wardowski.
My name is Tina Marie Wardowski (Driscoll) , I have a sister named Lisa Ann Wardowski (Easterly). Our father was Richard Louis Wardowski (brother to Mary Wardowski Bagnall her daughter has posted on here). My father was 40 at the time of my birth in 1969 and he was born in Michigan. I am looking for any Native Anerican link to the Wardowski's through Florence Wardowski most likely (my paternal grandmother). I welcome any information on the Wardowski name.

My name is Debra Twardowski and have some info on the Twardowski's who immigrated from Poland to Chicago. This post looks old so not sure if anyone is needing info. The name was not changed on our side (that I am aware of).
