That would explain why I never saw Great Aunt Dorcas but I sure heard Dad speak of her many times.

I continue to research Susan Powell. All I know is that she married John Jacobs (my great grandfather) in Herring Neck, NDB, in 1863 where their first three children (Phoebe Ann, Elijah and David) were born. I have a picture of Susan in her wedding dress, taken some years after they moved back to Westport. Fortunately, at that time Westport had a very accomplished photographer by the name of Herman Pearce (You can see Herman's diaries at http://nl.canadagenweb.org/wb_hermanpierce.htm - some years are missing)... the family story was that Susan wanted a picture in her wedding dress and wore it at this time just for that purpose. The Powells apparently came to NL from Virginia, USA, and I have found a Powell family tree in the US that shows a Susan marrying a John Jacobs. A huge portion of the family tree is marked private and my request by email to the owner of the family tree did not get a response. I also have a picture taken by Herman of his house... the very house that I was born in and on the hill in the background you can see a house that is believed to belong to John and Susan. When I grew up there that house on the hill was just the remains of a foundation.

I will send you the pictures (Susan and the houses) by email. My email is maxsjacobs@gmail.com

Surnames: Paul
The interview with Santu in 1910 says that her father was a Beothuk who was taken and raised by mic macs and given the name Kop Paul. John Paul born 1854 in Burgeo and died 1927 in Badger is the father of my great grandfather Andrew Paul born 1893 in Seal Cove. We know very little about Andrews mother. No idea if there's any connection but worth looking into. I have been hesitant top link into many of the Paul's listed as I fear they may not be connected but from what I'm reading, all the Paul's seem to come from one family...?

I have been coming across various documents relating to Noel Paul, Newell Paul, birth date 1824 or 1833. Does anyone know if this is all the same person or if there were a couple of Noel/Newell Paul's?

Surnames: Paul
I am a Point Leamington Paul, great great granddaughter of John William Paul born 1854 in Burgeo. The only thing I know about my great great grandmother is that her name was allegedly Mary. Their son, Andrew Peter Paul, was born in Seal Cove and settled in Point Leamington. His oldest child and the first mic mac born in Point Leamington was my grandfather, Eugene Douglas Paul.

Hi Wendy...I actually have quite a bit on the Paul Family...and yes they are all related! My husbands great grandmother Mary Paul was the daughter of Ellen Paul....and all my information shows that your John Paul is the son of Noel (Newell Paul) Paul and Elizabeth ...according to Phil Jeddore. My problem with the wife Elizabeth is that I have a baptismal for Ellen Paul daughter of Noel (Newell) Paul & Jane Silvester ...Ellen was born in 1846 & Noel & Jane were married in 1839...and another baptismal for Francis Paul by the same parents in 1866...this means that John Willam Paul would have to be the son of Noel & Jane Silvester.
According to Bev Warford...Noel is the son of Joseph Paul...Noel was born c1824 in BIG RIVER now BIG COVE New Brunswick
John Paul married #1 - Unkown Joe ...Children: Mary Paul & James Paul
John Paul married #2 - Mary Jeddore...Children: Andrew Peter Paul - Jul 1894 & Hettie Paul
John Paul married #3 - Annie Bowns Butt.... and I have a list of children

As for the Jewer name ...yes they are spelt both ways...in the 10+ years of researching all this I have found many jewer (jure) in our family....The name changes came about with the catholic priests doing marriages and baptismals...they wrote what they heard...the original was JUER...and I do have (somewhere) info on that origin to newfoundland.... who were your grand parents ?... I may have the info for that jewer side.

I hope this helps you...there is no doubt about the Mi'kmaq in your family and it is a given...my husband got his "Indian" on the Paul (his mother's) side through his g-grandmother Mary, then to Ellen to Noel & his father Joseph...you need 5 generations.

Anything you need please write me at miqmakman@hotmail.com ...I just did another branch of the family decended from Noel Paul's brother William Paul who married Joanna Silvester ...sister to Noels wife Jane...so there is info...and it is available...hope to hear from you...Jackie

Wendy - one of my family names id Dewar and I've made extensive investigations into that name. They are from Perthshire Scotland. I don't KNOW of any that came to (what was to become) Canada prior to 1800 but there may have been some. Mine moved to Ontario in 1818. Others moved to Nova Scotia and PEI. Given the lack of any formalized need for spelling your surname, and the broad range of accents across Scotland and Ireland and the new found land, there are MANY spelling that are equivalent. I heartily suggest you not limit your search to only a few of them. Consider - Dewar, DeWare, Jewer, Jore, Jure, Deoir, Doer ... and let your imagination roll!

Hi
Yes my understanding is that they are the same name, variations. So we are related? My grandmother was Emily Jewer who married Nathaniel Hart.
