Vicki,
I phrased it as I did because you're not the first person to come to these boards with a private tree talking about all the research they've done with nothing to back their claim. Often times they turn out to be clickologists with 10's of thousands of people in their tree with other trees cited as "source" material. I'm not saying that that's the case here but when I looked at your profile all I see is one tiny tree with 150 people in it and no more.
I received your message. I find it interesting that you are hesitant to email the "strangers" who could provide all the answers you seek yet you shared your telephone number with another "stranger" namely me. Email the owners of GEDmatch and pose your questions. I suspect you'll find them responsive.
I'm not an attorney either corporate or otherwise but I've dealt with enough 501c's to know that the reporting required is a PITA. Setting up as a for profit corporation gives the owners the ability to both turn a profit without having to ensure they've reinvested every dime as well as show a loss and get some coverage from a tax standpoint. If the owners eventually sell to a larger organization more power to them. Maybe an influx of capital would help eliminate some of the issues the site has now.
As for FTDNA (another for profit site a lot of us have our data loaded on) I already have mine (both y and autosomal) loaded as well as my mother's atDNA. The next time they run a sale and I have the money to spare I'll upload the atDNA kits from both my maternal and paternal aunts. I'm of a mind that the more places I have my results loaded to and the more people I share with the more possibilities I have of getting results.
Regarding the rest of your post, I'm not overly concerned about proving or disproving anything concerning the Lost Colony right now. My interest ends with my family. If sometime down the road I find that my family ties extend to the Lost Colony then I'll start down that path.
If you're truly interested in getting correct information out you'd stand a much better chance of it by having said information where someone could find it. Not tucked away in a private tree somewhere.
I'll respond to your message and I'll share my email address. It's a much better way to communicate. You have access to my tree on Ancestry. My kit on FTDNA is Mr. Dennis Allen Potts. You neglected to share your FTDNA ID and I don't see any matches under the name you signed your message with so the ball is in your court as far as whether we share DNA or not.
Dennis
