I am in search for a genealogy of my family's name-Vanoven. I think it is derived from the name Vannenhauffen, but not for sure. I would really appreciate any additional information on findings on my family name. Thank you for any help or effort given to my search.

Where are you Vanovens from? There were only 2 I know of that came into US. One came to NY and stayed there and another was an orphan that went to ILL/MO/ARK. I am from the orphan, Frank Gaston Vanoven.

As far as Daw/Daws go the first one I have been told about was Nicholas Daw/Dawe. I have not done any research going to England. I had others lines I was working on. Nicholas Dawe helped settle the town of Bath, NC about 1700.

My name is Van Oven and I live in the Netherlands. I am researching the families Van Oven / Von Oven / Von Ofen / Vanoven / Vonoven etc.
I am very interested in what you know about the Vanoven family, so please let me know.

Please have a look at my GeneaNet site: http://gw.geneanet.org/vanoven

Also have a look at: http://www.geneanet.org/contact.php3?source=cdstiernet

I am curious to know if we can find any connection.

Best regards,
M.J. van Oven

I can tell you very little since our Vanoven appeared to drop in from no where! This is what I have:

Per marriage record:
Gaston Vanoven to Cynthia Willis, February 19, 1879, St. Francois County, Missouri.

Per 1880 Federal Census of Missouri:
William Vanoven, age 23 with wife Cynthia, age 19 and daughter Mary J. 7 months old
He states he as well as his parents were born in France and that he spoke French.

Next door is a John Koontz, age 30, born in Holland with wife Mary A., born in Missouri. I always wondered if they were related to each other. Of course, the name Koontz was probably mispelled by the census taker.

Per the 1900 census Gaston states he was born in France, father in France, mother in Germany and that he immigrated in 1859 and was naturalized. (We have not been able to confirm this)

Per 1910 census Gaston states he was born in France and speaks French, father born France, speaks French, mother born Belgium, speaks Dutch, immigrated 1859, naturalized.

Per 1920 census, he and his parents were born in France, he immigrated 1878, naturalized 1887.

From talking to cousins they were told he said he was smuggled onto ship. He was very small in stature but made up for that in meanness. Must have been very unhappy even though he had 13 children, all of whom hated him and left home as soon as they could.

This is all we have. It would be wonderful if we could make a connection.
