Daniel Webster Dalton (aka "Kit" Dalton) was born Jan. 23, 1843 in Logan Co.,KY. His mother was opposed to his joining the army during the early years of the Civil War and sent him to live with an uncle in Huntingdon, TN. When he was 17, he enlisted in the Confederate Army. After being seperated from his troop, he sought shelter back at his uncle's farm and a Union officer shot his uncle for harboring a fugitive. Dalton swore revenge. With a troop of irregulars he gained a reputation as a sort of "Robin Hood" and began to call himself Captain Kit Dalton. They joined up with Quantrell's Raiders and took adavantage of civil strife in Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas; making life miserable for both Union sldiers and other citizens. Among his companions were Cole Younger and Frank James. After the War they held up trains and robbed Banks. Dalton decided to "go straight" after the death of a comrade and joined the Texas Rangers. He later collected his wife and moved to Blythville, AR and then in 1888 moved to Memphis,TN.where they lived as respectable citizens. He joined up with a group to fight in Cuba and caught the fever there. His wife heard nothing from him until he later turned back up in Memphis. He died in 1920 and is buried in the Confederate section of Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis.
