Where was this picture taken?

I found this photograph in my grandmother's apartment. Her mother is from Halden, Ostfold, Norway. No one recognizes anyone in this picture, but my grandmother believes it was taken in Norway. Is there anyway to tell where this was taken based on the features of the house or the style of clothing? I know this is a long shot.

I believe the notation at the bottom is the signature of the person who took the picture and the date 1951, but I am not positive if I am reading the date correctly.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hallo Jill
I noticed the rugs. It`s a typical kind of rug for Norway called "filleryer", made from old clothes torne in strips and woven . Maybe it`s commen other places too, but every home had these kind of rugs. Do you have any contact whit your family in Halden. I live here and I think I know of a family called Waleur.

Really? No, I have no contact with any family in Norway because I have yet to find any. It would be great if you could look into that family you know, just in case.

Are these rugs typical now? Or were they from a certain time period?

The rugs are an old norwegian and swedish traditional way of making rugs and has been so for a long time. It has become quite popular again especially in old houses.
I showed the picture to my uncle to see if he could recognize anyone. He knew a man called Reidar Waleur, he would bee somewhere between 90-95 years old. He is now dead. He worked has a driving licence teacher here in Halden. He has a daughter, Anita, born in 1940 in Strømstad, Sweden. Maybe that`s why it is so hard to track the family down. Strømstad is only 30-40 km from Halden. I`m going to check out some info. tomorrow ( it`s over midnight and I should go to bed even if I have holiday).

OH MY GOSH!!! I feeling like crying right now. You found Arthur!!!!! And I still have living relatives!! I don't even know what to say! THANK YOU SO MUCH! My grandmother is going to cry when I tel her. I can't believe you found Arthur; I could only find records of him until 1900. AHHHH!!

I cannot believe this at all! Reidar's children are my second cousins, once removed. You have made my day--my life! I don't know. I'm just can't believe it right now.

Do you have anymore information on who Reidar married? Or, especially, how I can contact Anita, Inger, or Terje? I wonder if they know they have relatives here.

Thank you for giving me some of the most exciting news of my life! :)

Hallo Jill
I`m so happy that I was able to help you even though my english is not that good. I am going away for the weekend, but I will ( if you want to ) contact Anita or Inger Lise monday morning to let them know about their family in USA.
I do not know the name of Reidar`s wife at this moment.
I have printed out your picture of the family, maybe it would be possible to identify persons now.
Would it be easier if we communicate directly, by mail? If so my e-mail adress is: engrosjensen@halden.net

Best regads

Oh, gosh, I wish I could say we were hopping on a plane next week, but it is very expensive to travel to Norway. :( But my grandmother would definitely come; this is all for her. Hopefully we can somehow get enough money together to get her over there, as she is 84. I never thought I'd find anything so profound about my family in Norway, but here it is. I don't know how we will get to Norway, but now I know that amazing, unexpected things can happen, so I'm not giving up hope! Thanks again.

Hi Jill,
No, we don’t even know when his parents died due to the fact that the church books for that period are not yet publicly available. In addition, DIS Norge have yet to finish register all the cemeteries in Østfold. I just checked and some of the cemeteries in Halden the registering are in progress but I’m not sure when they will be published.
I guess when you get in contact with your relatives they would know. …or if you can’t wait you just have to post a new message to se if you could find a volunteer to roam the cemeteries of Halden. ...at midnight, he, he...

Arna

I see you have done an amazing task in helping Jill and I was wondering if you might be able to help me??

I am looking for more information about my GG grandmother Johanne Petronelle Jensdatter - Her mother was Boel Marie Johannesdatter( b. 15 April 1824 -Idd halden) & Jens Olsen ( b. abt 1824-Frederickshald)

Boel's parents= Johannes Olsen Stokkebro & Pernille Olsdatter Sanden

I am trying to find out more information about Jens Olsen?? Who were his parents etc. There seem to be a couple Jens Olsen 's about the same age in the Idd area. However I can not seem to find the right one??

Boel was not married to Jens when Petronelle was born & later married Carl Brynildsen in Idd -8 Oct 1848.

Johanne Petronelle was deaf & married Claudius Magnus Pedersen( also deaf)-They both went to the deaf school in Oslo & they may have married in Idd or Oslo??

Do you think you or someone might be able to help me??

Mange tusen takk,

Jan:)

I can understand why it would be hard to find the right Jens Olsen; that's such a common name. At least you know his father's first name. Ha ha.

Anyway, if anyone can help you, Arna and Anne are certainly the best I know.

I know you've been looking for a long time, but have you checked the LDS Search Pilot? or the Norwegian Digital Archives? or the Norwegian Historical Data Centre at the University of Tromso? I found a lot of information at those three places before Arna stepped in and saved my life. :)

If you need links, let me know. And I can only say, even if it takes a long time, and you feel you have searched everywhere, I have proof that there are people who can find even more than you were looking for. It IS possible. :)

Can you give me some more info on Jens Olsen? Birth date? Spouse? Parents? Anything you know. I see you have Johanne Petronelle Jensdatter (born 19 Mar 1846 in Idd, Ostfold, Norway). Is she the daughter of Jens Olsen? I'll try to help as much as I can because I have been known to find some things now and then, although I'm not an expert in Norwegian ancestry.

Reply here or e-mail me at: norwegian16@hotmail.com

Hi Jill,

Yes, Jens Olsen is a very common name. Yes I have tried & tried for years to find him. He must have been in Idd in 1845-46 for sure as that was when Johanne Petronelle was born. His father would have been Ole ______??

Petronelle's mother= Boel Marie Johannesdatter was born 15 April 1824- so I assume Jens was around her age.

All I know is that Jens was born abt 1824 in Fredrickshald( Halden) & I am assuming Idd also?? But possible there might deaf connection in his family??

Boel & Jens were not married when Johanne Petronelle was born. (Petronelle was also deaf & I think the only child of Boel)

Boel's parents = Johannes Olsen Stokkebro & Pernille Olsdatter Sanden & they have a large extended family in the area.

Johanne & Pernille children & Boel's siblings were:

Michael Sorensen Stokkebro(b. 1810)( 1/2 brother)
Sofie Marie (b. 1815)
Olaus(b. 1818)married Fridrikka Jacobsdatter- Olaus died in Odden
Boel Marie( b. 1824)married Carl Byrnildsen(b. 1824-Sweden)
Anne Stine( b. 1829)- married Andreas Jacobsen (Hvaloernes Prgj Ostfold Norway)

Sorry I do not have much to go on ?? That is why I have been having so-o much trouble finding Jens. Even the baptism record doesnt have much on him. I think there was a occupation for him on some record.

Bye for now,

Jan:)
