Hi Sharon
Thanks for replying and sending details of the children of Charlotte and James.
A year or so ago, I prepared the following summary of the life of Thomas Gooch, for the Queensland Pioneer Register:
Thomas Gooch, born in Hailsham Sussex in 1820, joined the Army at 19. He fought the rebels in Canada, and married Eliza Titley in 1844. Eliza accompanied Thomas’ regiment to Ireland. In 1851, Thomas joined the London Metropolitan Police. In 1858, Thomas and his family emigrated to Victoria where he joined the Victorian Police, stationed near Geelong. Thomas was discharged in 1862. The family returned to London.
They emigrated again, to Brisbane, in 1866. Thomas joined the Queensland Police. From 1874-76, Thomas was sergeant in charge of the Palmer River Cooktown Gold Escort. After two years, he could take no more of the harsh life and was transferred to St Lawrence. Thomas’s health had been permanently affected and he retired in 1878.
Thomas and one of his sons Edward then farmed outside St Lawrence. Thomas and Eliza moved into St Lawrence, where he died in 1889. Eliza died in 1908.
I don't mention that the family lived in Morinish, where Charlotte and James married, from 1867 to 1872.
Eliza's mother's name was Charlotte but I don't know her surname.
Charlotte's siblings were Thomas Richard b. 1845, Thomas Walter 1847-1933, Maria Amelia 1852-1935, Emma 1854, George 1857-1924, Edward Barwon 1859-1932, Alice Leigh 1861-1861 and William Henry 1866-1896.
I am very interested to find out where Charlotte was born and the date of her birth and hope you might be able to help.
Also, do you happen to have any old photos of Charlotte or her family? I have one of Edward, her brother and my great grandfather, and his family but nothing else of that era.
Regards
Elizabeth
