If this is the James McCracken that was in Wofford's Settlement in Georgia I think he belonged to Aquilla, spelled many different ways including Equilea.

If you go to
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaalhn/nwga/
there is a link to Janelle Swearingen's page
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~janelle/Intruders.h...
I believe you will find both listed in the Intruders List in Wofford's Settlement.

Hi:

I have not seen any details that link James & Charlotte to Acquilla, per the follow-up posting, tho' I certainly agree that an Acquilla McCracken was in the area at the same time.

I believe there are sufficient data to confirm that this James McCracken, who married Charlotte Wofford, was one of the sons of James McCracken, Sr (ca 1770, NC; died 1859, Habersham Co GA). James Jr (born ca 1815, Habersham Co GA, died after 1860, Cherokee Nation, OK) married Charlotte "Lotte" Wofford 4 Oct 1837 in Cass Co GA. James and son William (1838 - 1888) were in one of the Cherokee "Removals" and both ended up in OK as I understand the records. Charlotte apparently died in 1838 or 1839, probably either as a result of childbirth (and prior to the Removal) or she may have part of the Removal party and may have been one of the many, many people who died on the "Trail of Tears". I have not found reference to her in the OK records, so I do not think she made it to OK, tho' James and William are there and each is said to be buried in OK.

Charlotte Wofford was of Cherokee Blood. Her mother was Agnes Pettit and her father was Charles Wofford (ca 1973 - 1852). Agnes traces back to the Downing family, one of the "old families" of Cherokees, as I understand the references. Agnes is on the Old Settler Roll - 1851.

Happy to share additional details and very interested to learn more about the Acquilla McCracken link to James, as I have suspected it exists but have never found anything other than proximity. There were several "Acquilla's" around the area as the generations grew, of course.

thanks for your time.

I would not argue the point. I am not descended from that line and what I have in my files came from other people. I remember that a lady (deceased 1980) shared some McCracken information with me because she knew I had a McCracken line. Her interest was Wofford. I am sure that neither of us verified the material which was photocopies from a book.
My personal line is John C. McCracken married Dicey Oliver on October 22, 1835 in Jonesboro, Washington Co. TN Their original marriage license was in their grandaughters's family papers when she died Apr. 22, 1967. (my aunt has this original license - Mother has a copy from Courthouse)

Do any of your McCrackens have Lytle as a first or middle name? My McCrackens were in Tennessee, too. Then some moved on to Arkansas. Our line always had Lytle in it tho, after Jenet Lytle, back in Pennsylvania

Donna:

Do you have info on the parents and/or siblings of your John C. McCracken? There was a John who served in the NC Continental Line and was awarded a land grant in TN. His grant application was sequentially numbered next to that of David McCracken (ca 1750). I am in David's line.

There were at least a couple of "different" McCracken families in Lincoln Co and in Giles Co TN by the early 1800's as well as at least one more McCracken family further East in TN. I have not identified the linkages among the families, if they exist. I suspect they do. (Our McCracken family often used the name "Oliver" as a given name for males, for instance.)

It's tough for me to imagine that John and David were not related, as both were in the Rev War in the same state in the same "Line"; both applied for grants at the same time in the same "office" and both got the grants and both ended up in TN. Yet, I have not connected them.

I would appreciate any additional details you may be willing to share on the McCracken and/or Wofford references that you mentioned.

Thanks for your time. My direct e-mail is cowen@ixpres.com if that is more convenient.

Cole--

Could you provide some details about the land grants? The numbers, where in TN they were located, etc.?

Thanks -- Dan Durham

Dan:

The grants were in Lincoln Co TN. The info I found was in papers relating to the "Glasgow Land Fraud", Glasgow was the Secr of State of NC. He and some political cronies were stealing (by altering paperwork) land grants made to Rev War vets. (Apparently we started early here in the US with crooked politicians!)

The grants were for land in TN but were made for service in the NC Continental Line. David's grant was Feb 10, 1797, warrant 4652 for 640 acres. The reference number in Glasgow Papers book is 8335. I have not done the detail work to locate the land of the grant specifically to a geographical location via survey coordinates. Given your question, correctly the answer is that I assume it is the land on which David McCracken later lived (and died) near Bradshaw's Creek, close to the Giles Co line but in Lincoln Co TN.

Attested witnesses (in the fraud investigation) state David had two sons, James and Joseph but no William, and apparently a "William McCracken" must have been alleged to have signed over David's land. I found the references in a book, "Tenn. Land Entries; Military Bounty Land, Morton Armstrong's Office" by Dr. A.B. Pruitt, copyright 1996, which documents many of the papers of the Glasgo fraud. Page 825 notes the info on McCrackens. The fraud was exposed, by the way, by the new state senator from TN, Andrew Jackson.

A "John McCracken" had warrant application 4653, I believe, (it may have been 4651) but in any case it was sequentially next to David's numbered application. John's grant was also for land in TN; also for service in NC Cont Line; also attempted to be taken by Glasgow and also exposed. And, there was a John McCracken in Lincoln Co TN during the period David was there.

I have never confirmed the family relationship, if any, between David and John, however it is difficult for me to image they were not at least first cousins, if not brothers. But, I haven't confirmed it. A witness mentioned in the land fraud papers is a Joseph Wilson; as you probably know, David's wife was Elizabeth Wilson and I suspect a link there with Elizabeth, of course, but again have not confirmed it.

Let me know if you would like additional detail. It has been a while since we communicated - last time on the Durham - McCracken connections; a Durham who married a McCracken in my "McCracken" family.

Hope all is well.
