Richard, I've going through some of my old file as I've not worked on the Coulter line in a while. I've found an email from Warren Coulter, now deceased, who mentions a book "The Tobacco Lords" by Thomas Devine. The book was published in Britain and is hard to obtain. The researcher we hired in Scotland found in this book a reference to James Coulter, and Hugh Coulter was the captain of a ship that went bac kand forth between Glasgow and VA. Earlier, and I haven't found my source yet, I found a reference where Michael Coulter of Glasgow bought in a ship load of tobacco.

I am also looking for a John Coulter who we believe was born in Ireland about 1740 and came to the New York sometime around 1765. He married an Abigail Parshall in New York in 1765, and later moved to Pennsylvania. John may have had a brother Simon. John had 9 kids: Thomas, David, Samuel, Jonathan, James, Mary, Abigail, John, and Elizabeth. I would love to find out where John came from, or trace the family back to their roots. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have just read about John Coulter and his son Thomas (who died 24 Oct 1844 in Richland County, OH) in an online book by Williwm Duff, _History of North Central OH: embracing Richland..._. He must have been in OH from ca. 1814.

Yes, that is my Thomas Coulter. He moved west in 1811 and helped establish Coulterville, later renamed Perrysville, OH. Thanks for the note about the online book - I will check it out!

My apologies for the break in correspondence. It was our anniversary so we took a little time off.

Very sorry to hear about Warren. I have obtained information from him in the past as well. He had a great deal of knowledge and he will be missed.

The book has me intrigued and so I have begun the journey of trying to find it. At this point in my genealogical research I have a vast amount of information (which needs some better organization), but I am starting to focus more on actual sources. So any source info that you have would be greatly appreciated.

Look forward to talking more and sharing info.

Congratulations on your anniversary!

Unfortunately, Warren passed away 24 Dec 2003 in Little Rock, Arkansas from cancer. His twin brother, Wayman, passed away 13 Sept 2008. Thankfully, Warren shared his research with a number of us through the years.

I found the book on the Tobacco Lords using a Google search, but found it greatly exceed my budget. Warren directed me to another, which I have just ordered: THE STEEL BONNETS by George MacDonald Fraser. It is the story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers. I don't know why I took so long to decide to read it. I found it on eBay.

Have been reading your information regarding the Coulters. I have been trying for many years to find the wife of James Coulter, son of Eleanor Torbett and James Coulter. I note you have a Margaret Peggy Hutson as his wife. May I ask where you were able to obtain this information. I am related through his son Andrew Coulter

Hmmm...I think it was Bob (RCoulter39) that posted that. I never had a name, only that James' spouse died on January 5, 1769 in Delaware. Now, unfortunately, I was very freewilly during my early years of research and did not obtain and/or record the proper source info that I should have.

However, being as how I have an exact date for James' spouse, I'm going to say that somewhere I got it from a cemetery insciption. Also, since I've never personally been to Delaware, I would say I got it somewhere on the internet. Perhaps you should try searching cemetery records from Sussex County, DE on Ancestry or Rootsweb.

To be honest, James' is a collateral branch for me, so I didn't spend much time there, but if I come across the info I will be more than happy to share. I have about 6-7 bankers boxes FULL of data though.
