Sounds to me like your grandmother's surname may have been Saint Amand (or one of the close sounding St's). If she was at all French and or from Canada, she probably had it changed in the late 1800's from Saint Amand.
Start looking in the census for names that sound close to it...forget the spelling, just go with the sound. It helps if you know her ethnicity. Once you find someone in the latest census for which they were alive, it will open up the doors.

I have found many spellings of Sentimen, Sentiman, Santimaw, Saintamaugh, to what I know today St.Amand
My family is found in the Kemptville area of Ontario. To the best of my knowledge my great grandmother and great, great grandmother were both born in Ontario according to census information. I understand it is hard, since many names have change. My Uncle once told me that one grave marker spelling was spelled as it was pronounced in "French". I have hit a brick wall. I know that other siblings to my great grandfather exist, but have not had much luck locating any more St.Amand's (Saint Amand) that link to my tree. As I understand the St.Amand being the dit name, that there are three possibly four lineages with the same dit reference. Good luck in your search

I have hit a brick wall with Santiman. I have gotten as far as William Santiman born in St. Lawrence County, New York in 1846. I find it suspicious that there are many Santimaws in the same county in NY. Maybe a name change? His parents were born in France and I have heard their original name was Sanctimau. Does any of this help you or do you have any info for me?
Kelly Santiman

Victoria and Joseph are my third great grandparents. They are buried in the Old St Mary's Cemetery. I believe they are in a grave with where the headstone is broken and only the pedestal remains. I am trying to get the headstone replaced. Joseph is a Civil War veteran.
