Armore area mines:
The first mine established was the Mayfield Mine in 1884, later known as #26. Around 1890 the Weeks and Wild mine was in operation and it later was known as #36. By 1910 there were 24 working mines in the Ardmore area with the largest being Central Coal Coke Company mine #70. The other mines were: #24, #25, #28, #36, #48, Sunflower Mine, #33, #26, #27, #60, #57, #69, #68 (not to be confused with #68 located south of Bevier and the largest underground coal mine to exist in MO), McGrath Mine, Viers Mine, Henry Mine, Herrington Mine, #52, #62, Emerson Mine, Old #69, Brown Mine, Craft Mine, Davis Mine, Duncan Mine and Phillipps Mine.
Now, before you ask: Yes I am Donna Llewellyn Lester who published the book on the coal mining in Macon County, MO...and...NO I do not have any books available. Sometimes copies can be found on Amazon.com.
I hope this helps you.
