What Slovak boards have you posted?

You can view Vysny Orlik's church records on your own computer screen.

If you want to find distant relatives, you would need to send few letters to the ancestral village.
George is Gyorgy in Hungarian; Juraj in Slovak. Jurko would be a term of endearment for a small boy who is Juraj/George
Gnicho makes no sense as this most likely is a transcribing error. The only way for me to come up with a correct name would be to actually see the manifest.

In Vysny Orlik's phone book:

Find VILKOVSKY http://www.zoznam.sk/hladaj.fcgi?co=telzoznam&s=vilkovsk...

Vilchovszki, Andras F. Orlich 19 1882 1901
Vilchovszki, Janos F. Orliot 25 1875 1900
Vilchovszki, Peter F. Orlich 24 1877 1901
Wilchowszky, Illes F. Orlich 23 1879 1902 POssible this surname died out, is only in a female line as it does not show up in Vysny Orlik.

WILCHOWSKI exist in Poland but nothing close to over the boarder from Slovak Republic.

Thanks you.
I have attached an image of the ship manifest - the last 3 names on the page I believe are my relatives. The boys were named Peter & George but the mother, Eva, may have been using nicknames for them?

I am the daughter of Mike Kmetz and Margaret (mounier) Kmetz. I have been trying to find some Kmetz relatives that were around -- I know that that my grandfathers name was Andy or Andrew and his wifes name was Mary. They had 3 children , John, Mike and Mary. John was married to (I think )Anna and they live in New Jersey... no children. Mary married Jack Rosen and they had 3 children -- Douglas,Glenn and Andrea -she lived in Long Island NY. She and my uncle dies about 3-5yrs ago.. My uncle John died earlier.. I know that my grandfather Andy died in Penn. about 1954. I don't know of any brothers or sisiters he had.. MY grandmother,Mary died when my Dad was 12yrs and is buried in Ill where they all resided untill her death. As you can tell I didn't know either of the grandparents since my grandmotherdied of an earlyage and my grandfather died when i was only about 4 yrs old. I do know that both grandparents were of Czech descent but not sure when or where they came when landing in US. They were of Russian Orthodox faith. If you can help with some info from that side of the country it would be helpful. Karen(Kmetz)Bridick

Your ancestors KMETZ/KMEC being Russian Orthodox or Byzantine Catholic were not of Czech descent but Slovak or Rusyn.
The word Czech Americans use it incorrectly. Up to 1918 it was Austria-Hungary http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm After the fall of this empire several new countries were formed and one was Czechoslovakia [2 nationalities with 2 languages but 90%similar] In 1993 Czechoslovakia separated into Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. I feel your research will be in eastern Slovakia.

As you can see by the previous replies, the Kmetz name is fairly common among late 18th century immigrants. My ancestors were from Saros Megye (Vizny Orlich) in what is today NE Slovakia. They were originally Eastern Rite Catholics, many of whom became Russian Orthodox. I have a Mike Kmetz listed in the household with my known ancestors Eva, George & Peter on an 1895 Passaic, NJ census, but we do not know who he is. There is also a Kmetz headstone for my family in a cemetery in NJ where my grandfather & others are buried. A different Kmetz family that includes a Father, son Michael C.(1902-1983), wife Mary (1876-1946), Husband Mike (1860-1914), Daughter Helen & Son Rudolph are also buried there, because the name is the same & the cemetery was used by the church both families attended, but we are not related as far as I can tell.
In any event, good luck in your search. The person replying to your question before me has been very helpful to me in referring me to Carpatho-Rusyn research sites. She should be a good resource.
