I dont know if this is helpful at all, but Michael Whalen is a very prominent name in im family here in southern california. however, this family is riddled with divorce, and all i know is that my biological grandfather is named John Michael Whalen and is divorved from Freida Whalen-Wright. Try to work backwards i suppose

Thanks for the response, but I don't think there is a connection. What little information I have on Michael Whalen is that he emigrated from Ireland late in the 19th century and settled in the NYC area, Yonkers, until his death.

James, I do not know anything about Michael Whalen except that he was my fathers biological father. He was maried to a Helen O'Brien in Yonkers NY in the early 1900's. Helen O'Brien died about three months after giving birth and my father was adopted. I am trying to fill in some history.

Are you related to or familiar with the Michael Whalen who was an actor in at least the 1930's? He was born Kenneth Joseph Shovlin in Pennsylvania and somehow is related to me. His mother was Mary Whalen

My ggggrandfather was Thomas Whalen. He had two brothers, Michael and John. They lived in Yonkers. Michael drove a team of horses for Alex. Smith Carpet shop. Not sure the dates, but Thomas was born in 1878.

I know that Michael was a bus driver in Yonkers in the 40's and 50's.
I don't know if this is the Michael I am looking for but maybe I could verify data through death notices, obituaries, etc.

Thomas was a paver. I am still trying to find out more information on them. I found him in the 1920 census with his wife Mary. According to the census, Tom was born in 1878. All I have is a letter from a great great uncle written to my grandfather describing the family history. They were from Waterford, Ireland. Michael drove a team of horses for the Alexander Smith Carpet shop and was well known because of his ability to handle horses and wagons used for delivery rugs.

Hope this helps.

Do you have a good source for obituaries? I've been wanting to look into more detail myself.

I'm not sure. I wouldn't be surprised since my family is from New York also. You have me interested. What kind of information do you have?

Thanks for the response, but I do not know how much help I can be since I have nothing factual, only word of mouth.
My Michael Whalen lived in Yonkers and married Helen O'Brien 1907-1909. They had a son in September 1909 but Helen died late 1909 or early 1910. The son was adopted by his aunt and uncle. I heard much later that Michael remarried, was a bus driver and lived on St Joseph's Ave.

Please let me know if there is a connection or not.

I was following two Yonkers whalen families at one point, both with similiar first names. I have research on both families. Do you know the parents names of your Michael Whalen. Was his adopted uncle a Whalen as well? Email me.

He was adopted by his maternal aunt, Bridget O'Brien Ahearn and her husband Michael Ahearn.
I do not know anything about Michael Whalen, not even birth or death.

Hello Lisa, and everyone researching WHALEN families in Westchester county, NY.

I am currently researching Thomas Joseph WHALEN (born Nov 09, 1880, in NY per WWI draft card) who married Anne/Anna Mary O'BRIEN (born circa 1887 in NY) and had at least two sons (Thomas Patrick born 1916 and Harold/Warren born circa 1919), and possibly a daughter, Mary, born circa 1915.

In 1920, Thomas Joseph, Anne and the boys were enumerated at 39 Morningside Place.

By 1930 Anne indicated that she was widowed, and she and the boys and a 14-year-old daughter, Mary, were living at 38 Riverdale Ave. (I don't know where Mary was in 1920, nor whether she was a child of both Thomas WHELAN and Anne O'BRIEN.)

As yet I've not proven a family of origin for either Thomas Joseph WHALEN or Anne Mary O'BRIEN.

In researching these families, I've retrieved quite a few documents listing many of the first names mentioned in this thread, plus an Elisha S. WHALEN who lived in the area as early as the 1860s.

Can any of you steer me toward death records or an obit collection for Westchester county, or suggest a church in Yonkers that might have records for this family?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

For metaphor - I do not know of an obit collection for Westchester County as most of the death certs are by cities/towns. If I remember Yonkers, Morningside Place is in Sacred Heart parish. If you have the date and place of death I would try to get the death cetificate, or the Yonkers Library has the local newspaper on Micro-fiche, if you have the date.

CORRECTION to my original Thomas Joseph WHALEN/Anne Mary O'BRIEN post

Greetings, researchers.

In my original post I indicated that Thomas Joseph WHALEN was born on Nov 09, 1880 in NY (per WWI draft card).

Based on Thomas's age (22) on the record of his 1914 marriage to Anne Mary O'BRIEN, I conclude that the above-identified Thomas is not the correct individual.

The Thomas Joseph WHALEN I am researching was more probably born June 23, 1891 (per WWI draft card); in 1917 he was married with one child and resided at 20 Sherman Avenue in Yonkers. A poor scan of his WWI draft card is attached.
