Your place in Hancock County must not be too far from Twin Lakes on US Rte 60. My good friend in research, Wayne Meador, relates that if there were any relationship between Letitia Brickey and Murdy M. Burdett, it would have been stated in the second census column. He also said to me that in some of the post Civil War censuses, orphan children were awarded for services as payment for room and board. They were called "servants" and sometimes simply "nurse." The relationship was not uncommon in households of the more wealthy elderly citizens of Breckinridge County. The county placed poor orphan children and the elderly received some labor and the child a place to live. Whether this sort of arrangement existed in the Letitia/Murdy relationship was unknown. County records should clarify the situation. Also, the given name, "Murdy" may actually have been 'Merty' which was a nickname for females named Myrtle which was a common name during the era in question.
