Henry Brown, Charlotte Olson

The 1900 census for Homestead shows a Charlotte Olson, sister of Henry Brown living with the Brown family. I think she died between 1900 and 1910. Could anyone tell me if there is a deceased list for Florence county for those years?
Thank You. Evans

There are still people living in Homestead with those last names. Have you attempted to contact them? Also, at one time Aurora and Homestead were one town. They split about 1918, I think. I would be glad to do look-ups for you as I live right across the border in MI and used to live in Homestead. Also, I have all the old school records for the McKinley School in Homestead if anyone was a student there. My records cover that timeframe. My late husband's family has lived there for over 100 years. If she lived on the east end of Homestead, she was probably buried in the Aurora-Homestead Cemetary and I could check that if it would help.

You might want to contact the Florecne Mining News or the Florence County Library, too. They may have some information.

Chris,
Blessings to you for replying to my msg. No, I have not tried to contact the Olson families living in your area. I have only recently learned that Charlotte Olson was in my family. The 1900 census for Henry Brown of Fence shows her in his household and as his sister. I have had a problem learning more about Henry Brown since I began my family history. He was my Great-Grandfather. Henry Brown (born 14 Feb 1834- died 4 Nov 1910) is not a Swedish name but he came from Sweden according to all of the census etc. His name must have been changed at the time he entered the US because I could not find him on any passenger list for the time he said he entered the country.
What I really need Chris, is a copy of Charlotte Olson's death certificate from Florence if they have them and I think they do. A little back ground. Almost all of my family was located in and around Iron Mountain, Ishpeming, Aurora, Fence/Homestead so it was a wonderful surprise that someone living near that area would reply to my msg. I lived as a youngster in the hamlet of Amberg. You probably do not know where Amberg is located if you drive faster than 50 miles and hour on hwy 141. :-)
My Grandpa was Charles Nyström (Newstrom). Both the Brown and Newstrom families had at one time lived in Iron Mountain. Grandpa had a farm near Aurora. My Aunt Henri Wallace was the last one living relative and she had lived also in Iron Mountain. There are living relatives of my Great-Grandmother Anna Britta Brown's sister but the problem is I have not had much cooperation from any of my family in this search. Charles Brown was (according to a census and family info) an assessor. I am guessing a property assessor for the county.
My goal is to learn the real surname of Henry Brown. He, his wife, and my Grandmother Victoria Newstrom are all buried in the Aurora cemetery. I think of them often.

According to the 1900 Census Charlotte was a sister of Henry Brown
On the 1880 census Peter and Charlotte Olson lived in Breitung, Menominee Mi. They did not have children as far as I know.
I am assuming she died between 1900 and 1910. She does not appear on the Wisconsin death list which ends at 1907.
1910 census Peter is a boarder and WD (widower?)
The Brown farm still has a house on it near Fence and was as far as I know owned by Kathryn Brown Erickson a Granddaughter of Henry Brown.
I suspect that Peter must have had some family in the area which would explain other Olson living there. Violet Olson was also a Greatgrand-daughter of Henry and Anna Britta Brown. She died in 1995 in Cincinnati Ohio according to the Soc Sec dth list.
Chris, I would be happy to pay you for any expense you incur and I would be more than appreciative if you can help me learn Charlotte's family name.

Madelene, I think the Oleson family you found is not connected to my Olson family. There were Oleson families in Florence county but not connected to mine. Thank you very much for the information however. Evans Newstrom

Sorry, I thought I had found the right person. I can check from 1907 further at the Vital Records Office in Madison on my next appointment which is on Aug. 16th. I don't see a Charlotte Olson on the index at the State Hist. Soc. in Madison which goes up to 1907 except for C. Oleson.
My letters to your e-mail address are returned to me which is why I am writing on this site.

Madeline, Your msg mentioned that email to me was returned to you. I wish you would try that again or send to vicfrancoeur@charter.net an put in the subject "For Evans Newstrom" he will then forward it to me. I have not had any problem getting email so I would like to know where there is a problem. Regarding Charlotte Olson. This is a bit strange in that she was living with Henry Brown during the 1900 Florence county, Homestead Township census and fromthere she has disappeared. I have already made arrangements to have the vitals in Madison checked but thank you so very much for the offer. If you do not live very far from Madison I will have other things I need to have checked. Madelene, I thank you very much for the reply. Evans Newstrom Collinsville Illinois acerbud@intertek.net

Evans:
I wouldn't be so quick to assume that the Charlotte Oleson that Madeline found wasn't your Charlotte. I did a search in the census in 1900 and found that there were no other Charlotte Olson/Oleson living in either Michigan or Wisconsin other than your Charlotte. If you notice, she and Peter were living apart in 1900. He is listed as head of household of house #60 in Homestead whereas she is living with her brother in house #5. She then may have went to stay with other relatives where she then passed away. The fact that the death certificate gives her residence as Homestead really shows that it is probably your Charlotte. Also the age given is so close to your Charlotte's; 1928 on the death cert and 1930 on the 1900 census. (It seems lots of people fudged their age on the census) LOL
I wonder if the death certificate gives her husband's name or her maiden name.
I don't want to tell you what to do, but I just felt I had to bring this to your attention.

I don't know if you have found this yet, but I located Henry Brown in 1870 census in Ishpeming, Marquette County, MI. He and his wife Anna have two children: Lucy age 2 and William age 7 months on this census. He is working as a miner.
I also found them on the 1800 census in Ishpeming with 7 children.
On the 1900 census it says he immigrated in 1867 and that Charlotte immigrated in 1872. Guess she came over later with Peter.
Maybe you could check out Marquette County for any information that could lead you to Henry's possible different last name.
Hope this helps.
