Hi:) Yes there are alot of William Gilpins. Mine was married to Sarah Anna Dean. One of his sons, George Washington Gilpin is my great grandfather.

I have not heard the story about the trapper, but I do know I have seen the name spelled GALPIN in the census on occasion.
