I am a descendant of William Shockley of White County, Tennessee, whose father, Thomas Shockley, died in his home. I am also descended from Richard Shockley who came here in the middle of the 1600's. I have tried to access your family page using the url which you supplied, but I could not do so. I would appreciate any help you could give me in tracing back from Thomas to Richard Shockley. Thank you. Shockley T. Shoemake.

The family pages aren't mine, they're put together by
a Lynn Schiller. I tried the above url and it's still
valid - it may be that the underscores in the " _ht_a " section maybe hidden when the msg gets posted.

You might also want to try:

http://www.patpnyc.com/shock1de.shtml - which also has a lot of information posted. The Nabb Research Center in Salisbury MD holds extensive notes on the Shockley family as well - http://nabbhistory.salisbury.edu/

I unfortunately can't quite connect yet. I believe my Thomas died in the home of his son Gideon who filed guardianship papers for his father "old and infirm" in Jackson County, GA in May 1813.

Good luck, I hope you make the connection. Those sites
should help.

Missy

I just came across your old post concerning Thomas Shockley. I have just started researching the Shockley side of my family and I believe your Thomas and mine are the same. I have the same birth and death dates for Thomas (b1755 d.1843) married to Elizabeth Molly Fried (b.1768); that his father was Richard (b.1733) and mother Elizabeth Adkins, (b.1740). If this additional information matches, I would like to hear from you. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

Jo Ann -

Unfortunately, I don't think your Thomas is the same - there is a lot of confusion between SC Thomas and TN Thomas who both carry a birthdate of 1755. My line comes through SC and my Thomas died around 1805, married to probably Connie Saltor/Sator. His father was also a Thomas, born in 1729.

There is a new Shockley book that has recently been published and sounds like it would have a lot of the information you are seeking. The forum on Genealogy.com
has information on the book and probably a lot of misc info relating to your Thomas.

Also try http://nabbhistory.salisbury.edu/ - they hold a lot of the older Shockley family history notes.

Good luck with your search!

Surnames: Bates, Bates, Shockley
Since posting this messge some years ago, I have a new email address and also a bit more information. I have read all the replies to my original message, and want to add this bit:

I am searching for the parents of James Shockley Bates who lived in North GA most of his life, although he was born across the line in SC. His birthdate is 1810 and he died in about 1882-4. He has a son named Charlton+ 12 other children.

Closeby there is a Salathiel Bates family who I find little about--although they move to the area of North AL where our Bates clan will move in the 1880's.

There is also an older Charlton Bates in GA who is likely our kin.

I say this to tell that there is a Shockley Family who have sons named Charlton, James and Salathiel. I have found trees posted for this family.

It would appear to me that two of the given names, Salathiel and Charlton are unusual enough that I suspect a connection--most probably that the mother of James Shockley Bates was a Shockley. Someone gave her name as Elizabeth, but there is no proof and it could be a guess.

We have found multitudes of Bates kin via a DNA project, but no ancestors for our James Shockley. We know--via DNA--that he is kin to John/Sally Springfield Bates of Greenville, SC and John's brother James/Eliz. Tubb Bates of Greenville --who move on to TN where his sons are called "The Seven Bates Brothers of TN". James, who married Elizabeth Tubb is first found in Rutherford Co. NC.

Many clues--no conclusions. Any help appreciated.

I don't have it on my database, but posibly in some papers somewhere, but I think that Thomas Shockley who died 1812-4, died at the home of his grandson, a son of Thomas seniors son, Thomas jr. The impression stood because Gideon recieved charge of his estate, but Thomas chose to live, or for whatever reason lived with his son's Thomas's son.
