I have the same story in my family too! But have never been able to verify it with any documentation.

I am a decendant of Mere Maro (actually in whakapapa as Marau ) and John Holroyd Baker - daughter Catherine / through the Baker / Walters line.

My info - birth / death certs / photos and stories come through the Walters and Bakers families.
