According to Dick's obituary, his father George died in 1939 and his mother died in 1977, so this may be the wrong WEREZAK family.

Alfred's 1969 obituary states that his father George died in 1939, and his mother Mary is still living.

Based on my friends adoption records her grandmother (Rose's mother) died about 1927 and the father remarried. Dick could well be the son of the second wife (he was born about 1928) so his mother could still have well have still been living. My friend was born in 1939 and the records make it clear Rose and her stepmother did not get along. She stayed with friends and neighbors before going into the home. It appears George was alive when the bay was born because the records state he was a farmer. Voters records in 1953 list a Mrs. George Werezak in Battleford, but no George so probably a widow.

Obits seem to list Rose/Rosa's mother as Mary but both the 1916 and 1921 list her as Marie/Maria. Also Rose named her daughter Shirley Ann Marie. I wonder if the second wife was Mary and most people did not know the difference. It is guess work but it seems possible.

It certainly seems likely Rose Jarman was the mother of my friend but no actual proof. Does anyone know if the there are death records for 1926/27/28 in Battleford. If we could find a death record for a Marie/Maria Werezak that would not leave much of question in my mind

Thank you so much for all the wonderful information you posted. I probably would never have made the connection without your help.

This is the Saskatoon library obituary index. It shows the date of publication in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, but only from 1946. There are 24 listings for WEREZAK.

Mary WEREZAK's (nee BUDZAK) obit was published 19 Jan 1977. I can't find this issue online, but you can contact the library. They are very kind and quick, but there may be a fee if you order a few. I wouldn't mention that you are researching an adoption.

Unfortunately, if you use WEREZAK as the keyword, you get 780 hits, most are for James Werezak, Park Funeral Chapel, which had been in business for 74 years. I don't know if they could help you.

I'm not discounting your point about Maria - the second wife could be a cousin Mary BUDZAK. And dare I say, Rose may have fibbed about her situation at home? Maybe she didn't get along with her mother, but it sounded better to say she had a wicked step-mother?

There are six boys and five girls in this family, according to Minnie's obituary. Are there just four siblings mentioned in the adoptions papers?

Can you post the ages with the sex of the siblings in 1939? For example, is the 27 year old a male or female? Thanks.

The 27 year old was a male. Can't remember the others, will get the info from my friend. A couple of things. It appears George's death records are under Yuriy Werezak. I have also seen him listed as Yurko. On the same burial index where Yuriy is listed is a Maria Werezak. Both are listed as being from Halfford. As for the step mother info it actually comes from someone who is trying to help her. He is writing a letter to someone in authority to ask them to find her a place In a home. The letter states she has a bad situation at home because of the stepmother and has been staying with friends. I will request a copy of the 1977 obit and see if it is helpful.

Thanks again.

I ordered the obit from the library. Had to do it by mail since they do not accept credit cards. This should be the make or break on this possibility. If it is not Rose I really don't know where to start. I did not find any other Werezak family that seems to fit at all.

According to the records she had been living with an Aunt for about two years before the baby was born but no info as to who she lived with or even where she lived. The records listed a male age 27, worked in an office, a male 23 worked I a garage, a 17 year old with details blacked out and a 12 year old living with her father. This does not fit very well with the George Werezak family but the worker may not have gotten all the details.

I received the obit on Mary/Marie who was married to George Werezak. It states she married George in 1905 and died in 1977 so clearly this is not the family of my Shirley Ann Marie Werezak. Records state the mother of Shirley's birth mother (Shirley's grandmother) had died several years earlier than 1939. I thought maybe it was a second wife who died in 1977 but not the case.

I seem to be at a dead end. Cannot find any Werezak girl who was born about 1920 who could have been the mother of Shirley.

Any ideas or suggestions for more research much appreciated.

I am so intrigued by this story... Nick and Natalie were/are my grandparents. My Mom says there was another Werezak family living in Saskatchewan, and her Werezak family and them had conversed as to whether they were related and weren't. Then again, this is just me speculating, but judging by Shirley's middle names, my grandpa did have a sister Anne. She was given up to Baba Buzak's(Marie) mother, who wanted another baby, and Marie had so many already(11), according to my grandpa's other sister, Rose. It's possible that, because Baba's mother was older than Baba, she could've died twelve years before the birth of Shirley. Anne was integrated back into the family at some point, because Rose said she remembered making fun of Anne for the way she dressed, having been raised by their grandmother. So, maybe, she resented Baba for sending her to live with her mother and that's why she stayed with aunts, due to things at home being rough? It's weird, because I had a child "out of wedlock", too, (at twenty-one, though), and was eventually forced to give him up for adoption, because the social worker used the excuse of domestic disharmony between my Mom and I to apprehend him(even though we'd patched things up by then) It's sort of like history repeating. My Grandma also told me I should have an abortion before that and compared me to a hooker, because you just don't have a baby when you're unwed in a Ukrainian family, lol! Also, maybe, there's only five siblings of Shirley's birth mother listed in the adoption records, because it was a small town, and they didn't want to be recognized as the family, with a daughter who gave up a child for adoption at nineteen, and if they mentioned all eleven, someone would be bound to? Again, just all speculation(I have been told I have a vivid imagination), but who knows?
