Also, obits, post death awards, newspaper articles, and even city directories. A lot of the city directories for widows are easiest to find for under their husband's names. I have also see property on maps listed for someone after death, presumably because it was still going through probate or because the maps took so long to be produced. I have one item for my family member that was found in a newspaper item for an article in the newspaper refering to a much earlier article.
But there are certain catagories such as frostfreedet mentions for census items where there should not be one for 1880.
It looks like they have already fixed this item, California State Roster, 1909 Government and Military records. When I first used to save it, it saved later and might not have made it into the searches under the date.
Just my opinion but two groups of items that I would like to see have an open date are books and newspapers. These frequently refer to earlier people and events. I do look at the biographies and history books found on ancestry.
