My Grandfather was a member of a Tribe in California. "Ben" sent me paperwork that was lost with our belongings in a Military move. I did not know "Ben" well as he and my Grandmother had divorced before I was born. My Father said he was 2nd in line for Chief . He was a Chiricahua,Apache. He had written we belonged to the Rose Bud Sioux. He
listed my 5th Great Grandfather as COCHISE, My 4th Great Grandfather as SITTING BULL and my 4th Great Uncle as GERONIMO. My Father stated that there was a black man taken into the tribe and became a great warrior that is also in my line.I would like to know "Ben's" proper name and what
tribe in California he belonged to . I can find nothing on his parents at all. If you can help me I would deeply appreciate it . This is all the information I was given. I thank you.

Pamela, it looks like you have 2 areas you need to search. Is this one line or 2? In the old Days the Sioux and the Apache were not in the same areas, so that will make it confusing for you. If your grandfather were of these bloodlines, but a member of a tribe in CA, he was likely adopted, unless one of his parents were from that tribe. The easiest way to start is with yourself, then your parents and work back. The 1930 census is due out soon, I think next month, so start with it and look for your family. Follow it back to the next, 1920, then the next, 1910. Geronimo's band was POW's in what is now OK for 22 years, and for a time before, in Florida, so this goes back to the 1870's The Chircauhua were not allowed to leave OK until after Geronimo died, then some went to the Mescalero Reservation in NM. Others stayed and are known as the Ft. Sill Apache. I would suggest starting with your family on the census and see where that leads you.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but my Granddad's younger brother,Clarence Richard Sharp was married to Little Flower May Sharp, she was Sitting Bull's Great-Granddaughter. I have her obituary and it has named as her children, Helen Saylor of Santa Rosa, Patricia Pedoria of Esparto, Nora Ramos of Winters, Silver Leaf Files of Redding, Rosemary Edwards of Phoenix, Jack McKarson of Elverta and Ben Woods of Whitewater. I think most of these towns are in California. May and Clarence are both buried in winters (Yolo county).

she and Clarence didn't have children of their own. May was a wonderful lady, I was privilaged to meet in 1972. I hope this gives you somewhere to start on your Sioux heritage.

That's funny! My great-great-grandfather is Geronimo Lopez. When he delivered the treaty after the Mexican-American war he was presented with an Aztec priestess and that produced my great-grandmother Roweena Lopez. Her daughter Florence Rogers married Sitting Bulls' great-grandson (could be grandson) Ted Irving who last I heard sat on the Sioux council. Ted is Teton Sioux.
Can't help you with Ben, but sounds like we may be related!!!
I am trying desperately to find people that can vouche for me so I can register with the Apache' tribe. I have an ancesterial ring that is supposed to open doors for me within the tribe, but without a voucher this seems impossible. The people I know that could vouche for me are either dead or if alive I don't know how to get a hold of them. Could you help?? Please!!! Write to me at: Michelle Canoles, 12115 N.E. Expressway #13, OKC, OK 73131. Thank you! p.s. - I am originally from the coast (n. and s.) of Calif. thx.

hi my name is christy. i am doing research on my husbands family tree. i was told by his grandmother who was told by her mother ( who is still alive) that geronimo is my husbands 5th or 6th great grandfather. i have found a few things about him. i know that geronimo's grandfather's name was Mahko. he was Last hereditary chief of his tribe. Could not past down Chief status to son because they no longer lived in the territory where he was chief. i know that geronimo was married 3 times and had children by all his wives. his first wife and 3 sons and geronimo's mother was killed in 1858 by Spanish troops from Mexico while Geronimo was away on a trading excursion in Mexico. if this sounds familar please contact me at cjyates@peoplepc.com. cause my husband and his grandmother are wanting to learn as much information on there family as i am.
