The area on the SW corner of 44/127 was the place known as "old fields" -- supposedly an area used by native americans, and yes, said to be "haunted." That whole area was part of the G B Taylor farm. Taylor owned land from inside U.S. 127 all the way across Salt River to the east side of the Anderson City Road. Probably everything between U.S. 62 and Hwy 44. Not sure of the exact boundaries or where his house was located.
I think the area where Strother Taylor was said to have drowned was closer in toward town, generally across from the former entrance to the old sewer plant. I think Saffell Street now comes out around that area.
The Witherspoon house was a white, two-story on the south side of Hwy 44 just outside (west) of town on Hwy 44. I am sure you remember it, too. It existed into the 1980s.
