I would be very interested in knowing about your Sprague lines as Aletha is descended from George Nelson Sprague. My grandmother was Louise B Sprague, d. of Rufus, s. of George Nelson Sprague. Would love to compare notes.

Here's a great link to information on the Thompson family of Oxford that has a lot of interconnections with Allens and also Dobsons, as I know you're also a cousin on that side of the fence. There were a few of us Thompson descendants involved in the planning of Yorkshire 2000 and I found out oodles of information on Richard and his wife Dorothy Patton.

Right now I'm at a wee disadvantage as my computer with all my genealogy stuff is being temperamental.

I too trace our family roots to a Benjamin Allen (1735-1823) who lived most of his later life in Baie Verte New Brunswick, Canada. I have been puzzling over his origin. I am descended from his son Jonas followed by Nelson, Shep, Harry and my father Lloyd. The latter 3 lived in PEI. I live in Nova Scotia.

Ben probably settled in Baie Verte in the mid 1760's after the French and Indian Wars as he is listed in a 1770 census of Cumberland County, and records exist of him marrying Sarah Somers in 1771 and starting a large family shortly thereafter. Although I have seen info that claims that he originally came from Connecticut (Louise Throop's Early Settlers of Cumberland Township) or Scotland (Early History of Botsford and E. ClarkWright's the New Brunswick Loyalists) I have not seen solid original references for either of these claims. Barbara Trenholm's web site lists several of his children as being Presbyterian which suggests a Scottish connection. Any thoughts?

I do know that he fought on the British side as a NCO during the French and Indian wars at Beausejour in 1755 (I have seen NB land petitions where he claims this) as well as probably Louisbourg (1758) and Quebec (1759) as he also writes that at the "conclusion of that war" he was eligible for a land grant as decried in "His Majesty's Proclamation". I have found a Benjamin Allen who was listed on a muster roll as a corporal in Capt John Fraser's Company of the Fraser Highlanders (78th British Regiment) when it was disbanded in 1763 and this Ben Allen accepted the offer to take a land grant and remain in Canada. (see Clan Fraser of Canada Web Site). I have found a Private (later promoted?) Benjamin Allen among the 45th British Regiment in 1760 in a muster roll in the British Archives in Kew, England. I have also found a Benjamin Allen, a discharged soldier, that arrived by sloop from Louisbourg in the port of Boston in 1763 (Port Arrivals and Immigrants to the City of Boston 1762-1769 by W. Whitmore) The 45th fought at all three of the above battles. At Beausejour there was a force of 2000 New Englanders under Winslow and Scott of which I cannot seem to find any muster rolls as well as a smaller force of several hundred British regulars, including the 45th.These forcers were all involved in the expulsion of the Acadians from Chignecto, the Annapolis Valley and Saint John areas. The Fraser Highlanders arrived in North America in 1757 (wintered in Connecticut!) and then went on to fight at Louisbourg and Quebec. In these latter two battles New Englanders were represented by several companies of Rangers (~ 500 men) under the same Scott as above as well as smaller numbers who enlisted with the regular British Regiments. The fact is there was a lot of movement between all regiments during this war and so Benjamin Allen could have been with any or all of the above. Anyway, any thoughts or knowledge of which regiment(s) Benjamin Allen fought with or reliable sources of his origin?

Also I have read online info to suggest that he was on the Rebel (Patriot) side during the outbreak of the American Revolution and that he was a tenant farmer with John Allan (no relation) who was one of the rebel leaders in the Baie Verte / Fort Beausejour area (renamed Fort Cumberland by the British). I have read a book (The Seige of Fort Cumberland) that lists a group of rebel Acadian farmers with John Allan and included is a Corporal Benajmin Allain under Capt Isaiah Boudreau. I have also found records of an Acadian named Benjamin Allain present at the same time and who in later years lived slightly north, (Bouctouche) and so this could be the same guy with John Allan. (info from the Universite de Moncton) Are there any sources that definitely place Benjamin Allen on one side or the other during the Revolution?

Sorry, for the rather lengthy Email - had to get it off my chest!!

I have had extensive chats with Ernie Clarke about the "Allain" on his list and have chastised him quite roundly.
I feel it in my bones that it is definitely our Shy Ben. I'm a double descendant of his as my two greats grandmothers were Catherine and Cordelia Allen. I can definitely trace back my ancestry to George Allen who married Letitia Thompson.

Where in NS are you?

Interesting. You have actually talked with the author. I notice on the web site www.acadian-home.org there is a list of Acadian Patriots and our Ben is spelled Allen with Alain in brackets. There are also other not so French sounding surnames a Casey, Farrell and Troop. How was it spelled on the original source? Do you know. I don't remember if he quoted an original document. The Allain by the name of Benjamin I found on the Univ. de Moncton web site was born in 1757 and therefore would have been 19 at the time of the seige of Fort Cumberland. He died in Bouctouche 1839. The web site is: www.umoncton.ca/etudeacadiennes/centre/white/allain.html

After the seven years war a lot of Acadians came out of "hiding in the woods" and became tenants on the land they once owned. They had a lot of knowhow with regards to managing dykes and marshlands that the new settlers found indespensible.

I grew up in Sydney, went to Mt A and have now lived in Halifax for several decades. Do you live in the same time zone?

I am a decendant of "shy Ben"Allen who would be my ggggggranfather and have just starting looking into our family history. Any information that one would wish to share with me would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle so that my children may have a better understanding of our history before they reach their forties like me.
Thanks in advance
