McCaugheys Grocery is probably McCartons. I remember going there with my mother. If you see Karl again, tell him my sisters and I still remember his donuts. I also remember the baker who sat in a booth in the front making frosting roses for cakes.

Now I don't know which movie theater we went to, the Home or the Gauntier. The Gauntier would have been closer to my grandmother's house.

Just for kicks I looked up and found a George McCartens Grocery Store at 1622 Central Ave. in KCK. That's a long way from our Quindaro. This was from the 1950 KCK city directory.

Hmmm. Now I'm confused. I do remember the name McCartens, but for some reason, I thought it was on Quindaro, near my grandmother's house. Childhood memories are sometimes hard to sort out.

We lived on N. 25 & Nebraska so neither store was particularly close. The groceries were delivered, so I don't remember going there much. We kids went to Twitchell's store on Washington Ave to buy candy since it was only 2 blocks away. Linda Twitchell went to Mark Twain with me.

Thanks so much for checking.

This might be of some interest to you. George and Oma Twitchell owned a grocery store at 2609 Everett in 1950.

I enjoy looking back at old Quindaro. My E mail is alandoninc@aol.com

I couldn't remember the street, so I looked at Mapquest to try to figure it out. Oh well.
