Several people on the Colby list on Rootsweb have jumped on this. Both your families are related.

John Colby s/o Thomas L Colby and Eliza Ann Gordon. John Colby married (1st) Mary Sexton b. 1851 d. 24 Jul 1878 (2nd)1878 Jane L Gilmon.

John and Mary's Children:
Archie T Colby b. 1871
Amos Lester Colby b. 17 Feb 1873

John and Jane's child:
Elmer Wesley Colby b. 18 May 1880

In the 1920 census Archie is living with Gertrude Prentice d/o Albert C Colby and he is listed as cousin.

We have yet to connect Thomas L Colby's father Caleb into the main Colby family. But the search goes on.

Andrew,

Did you see Ronald Colby's latest post? According to this, it appears that your Thomas Colby is the father of my John L. Colby. That means that in some way, we are distant cousins! Because this is my Dad's birth family,I would love to start collecting photos of Colbys--to see if there is a family resemblance. Can you send me the details on your own Colby line? In other words, how you descend from this Thomas Colby? I will gladly send you the information on our line if you like--just let me know.

My Dad was born Jan. 22, 1922 in Cleveland, OH and was named Harry Colby. When he was adopted approx. 3-4 years later, his name was changed to James William Russell, after his adoptive father, William Russell.

I look forward to hearing back from you at your convenience and will gladly share the rest of my family's information.

I hope you are having a great weekend==it has been really hot here in San Diego--temps in the 100's and upper 90's! Very unusual for us.

Pam

Ha ha, yes I believe we have a winner. I have faith in Ronald "The Colby God." I'll email you everything I have on Thomas L Colby and his wife Eliza Ann Gordon including all of his kids. Thomas and Eliza are my gggg grandparents on my dad's side and you're in luck because a distant relative and I have recently discovered a gold mine of Gordon info. Thomas's father is proving to be a researchers nightmare. The only possible parent I have for him is a Caleb Colby living with him in the 1850 Orange, Cuyahoga, Ohio census but he fails to reappear after that and probably succumbed to old age ..but the mystery remains because I cannot find him buried ANYWHERE in Cuyahoga county. I'll email you with more information.

"In the 1920 census Archie is living with Gertrude Prentice d/o Albert C Colby and he is listed as cousin." This is what confirms John as Thomas's son. Getrude "Gertie" Ardelle Colby would have had a cousins named Archie and Amos - you're are 100% right. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
