Thank you so much for your reply.
Let me tell you what I do know or think I know. John Stillwell (or Stilwell) was born 29 Dec 1801,in New York State, died 28 Nov 1896 in New West Minster, British Columbia. He moved there after the death his wife Maria Wood (possibly Woodcock)to be near his son, also John S. Clute and his family. I lean to Wood myself. Maria Wood Clute is buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Picton, Ontario.
As for the children of John S. and Maria Clute I have a great deal of information on them. Their daughter Frances Eliza Clute was my great-grandmother. She married David Scott.
Do you have the birth date of Mary Clute Church? I think Richard D. Clute was born in 1789. This may be incorrect and since there are several years between Richard and John, it is likely that other children were born but did not survive. If this is the case and my John fits into this family that guess may hold. Mary fits in here somewhere.
I have been in touch with John Becker. I will have to go through what John sent me (all of his research) which I copied what I though may apply to my John S Clute and returned to him and now with the Ontario Genealogical Society. I don't know if I have a copy of the article you have referred to in your first paragraph. I will go through those papers.
This is very fascinating as I may finally have names of John S Clutes parents. My only hang up is the names of Richard D. Clute and his wife Catharine Shonts who could have been John S's parents. I either have to many names or not enough generations. Do you know if these names fit in anywhere?
I will be standing at the grave of Maria Wood Clute in two weeks time to pay my respects to her. And two of her grandchildren that my family never knew existed, John and Mary Scott. Ages 7 and 3. They are buried next to Maria on the Scott cemetery p;lot. There was a space for John S. also.
I hope we will be able to continue a communication.
In what cemetery is Mary Church buried?
Best wishes,
Nancy
