Wanda:

Hi! I read with interest your description of your grandfather and great grandfather.
My father was William E. Martain - Born at the turn of the century 1899/1898 - I'm trying to see if there is any realtion between him and Edgar. Could you give me additional information? Who were Edgar's parents, perhaps he is a cousin of my father??

Thank you for any help.

Joyce

Please contact me about the above. I believe you may have information which is the part of the family I cannot locate. I read your posting about Alfred Coulter of PA and the heart attacks and the Lizzie Coulter mentioned. This is very important info I really need. My email is benluclar@cs.com

The information I have on Alfred Coulter is that he is my great grandfather on my fathers side. He was born March 25, 1975 in Harrisburg, Pa. and died March 15, 1954 in Dumfries, Va. He was struck by a car and that is how he died. He was the son of William Henry Coulter and Sarah Jean Brown. He had a twin brother Alfred Ottis Coulter who died at birth. He married Mary Alice Kincheloe on September 15, 1897 in Occoquan, Va. His siblings are Price , Sidney J., James, Alfred Otis, May E., Clarence C., and Pearl C. Coulter. As far as I know Alfred and Mary Alice had 3 children who are Altheda born Febuary 10,1914 in Washington DC and died Aug. 16,1991 in Woodbridge, Va., and Edgar M. Coulter, who is my grandfather born May 17,1917 at 1013 L St. S.E. Washington DC. and died Aug. 31,1961 on King St.,Seattle Washington. He married my granmother Evelyn Louise Roles . They had 13 children together.
Now Alfred Coulters father was born sept.1,1843 in Perry co. Pa and Married Sarah Jean Brown, born Oct. 11,1846 on Nove. 12,1865 in Franklin, Pa. William died Aug. 3,1923 in Riverdale,Md. Prince Georges County and Sarah died Dec. 8,1926 in brentwood Maryland. This all i have on alfred so far.
Please contact me with anything you have to share I would love to hear from you.
Thanks
Wanda

Hello again, Wanda,
I think we are in separate families, but am so unsure of the beginnings of Albert(Alfred) Charles Coulter, that I will direct you to my website to further explain this relative.
Albert Charles Coulter, was supposedly christened 'Alfred', changed his name and further known as Albert after grade school due to teasing.
I do know he was born in 1882 to Elizabeth Downing Coulter and (?)Charles Coulter in Emlenton, PA. He is on the 1900 PA census for Emlenton at age 18, along with his 38-year-old widowed mother, Elizabeth Downing Coulter, and sister Hattie, age 13 - all living with his grandparents, John and Rosie (probably Rosetta) Downing. He appears in all census info in PA after 1900 with his own family - wife and 4 children - whom I do know about, and died in 1932. He is the father of my 84-year-old mother-in-law, for whom I have tried to locate his parents to no avail.
Problem is this: Albert's father is listed on his death certificate as 'unknown' Coulter. Elizabeth Downing Coulter is shown as his mother, but we can find no info on her after 1900 census. I don't know if she remarried or what became of his sister, Hattie Coulter, who I am positive was living during the 1930s in the Pittsburgh area because of my mother-in-law.
The 1890 census - vital to what I need - is, of course, unavailable. Albert's marriage certificate also does not list parentage because he lied about his age and had no co-signers; hence, no info there.
During 1900-1930, when Albert has his own family, also listed in the household is John Downing, (his uncle, same age); however, I have looked extensively for him and cannot find out what happened to him.
I am at a dead end - gave up months ago on locating Albert's father's name and final destination of mother, Elizabeth. I have been everywhere, tried everything, ordered all available - am disappointed and discouraged.
I know of no VA connection at this point also.

I am sure we are from different lines. But some how have some of the same names. I can trace my Coulters to Pa. and Va. and some in Md. But we can keep in touch and exchange info. if I happen to run across some of your people. Thanks for your info. I am eager to learn as much as i can i and only go back as far as my great great grandfather on the coulter side and his name was William Henry Coulter. I found out he fought in the Civil War as William Henry Harrison. I am going to try to look up that name and see what I can find out. I will let you know how it goes.
thanks
