“Edward F. Carlough, 81, Dies; Headed Sheet Metal Workers

Edward F. Carlough, president emeritus of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association who negotiated the first health, welfare and pension plans in the construction industry, died Tuesday at his home in Alexandria, Va. He was 81 years old.

Mr. Carlough, who was born in the Bronx in 1903, served as the top officer of the 150,000-member union for more than a decade. He became active in union activities in the 1920’s in New York City and was elected president and business manager of Sheet Metal Workers Local 28 in 1941.

Mr. Carlough negotiated the first local health and welfare plan in the building and construction trades industry in 1946, for Local 28. Four years later he negotiated the first pension plan in the construction industry, again for Local 28.

He became general secretary-treasurer of the international union in 1951 and was elected president in 1959. He was re-elected twice, then stepped down to become president emeritus on reaching the retirement age in 1970.”

Edward F. Carlough was the son of George b. 1878 NYC & Elizabeth, grandson of David J. b. ca 1846 NJ & Elizabeth b. ca 1843,Ire., GGS of Elizabeth b. ca 1823 NY. The family is in Jersey City,NJ 1860, NYC 1870. David is listed as CARLO in NYC 1880. Edward is listed as Francis Edward 1910 Bronx, NY & as Edward in 1920 & 30. He married Florence Sweeney in 1927. They had a daughter Grace b. Sept.1928 Bronx, NY.

I believe Edward's grandmother, David's 1st wife was Elizabeth NEE Carlough, and died between 1880 & 1887, but I need to find her death record.

The word “nee” is used to identify a woman’s maiden name. If “Elizabeth ‘NEE’ Carlough” was instead written as “Elizabeth nee CARLOUGH,” it would mean that Elizabeth’s maiden name was CARLOUGH.

Thank you for your reply to my two May 21, 2007, postings on this subject. I still have not yet been able to connect this branch of the CARLOUGH (or CARLO) family to the rest of the CARLOUGH family. I also have been unable to locate David on any censuses before 1880. Have you been able to locate David and his family on any earlier censuses?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sue,

In the interest of conserving space, I capitalized NEE to indicate that it was believed to be Elizabeth's surname not her maiden name. The Elizabeth I'm looking for was a Daughter of Thomas NEE.

Hi again,

I just found 4 year old David in the 1850 Census in HoHoKus, Bergen Co.,NJ. His father is George and the family is apparently living with his mother's parents, Abraham and Betsy Forshay. 27 year old Elizabeth Forshay would be his mother.

As I said in my 1st post, he is in Jersey City, NJ in 1860 and in New York City in 1870.

CARLOUGH (1903 - 1985) of New York City, and Alexandria, VA,” located at the following site, in which she gives the name of Edward's grandfather David’s father as George, and the maiden name of David’s mother as Elizabeth FORSHAY, d/o Abraham and Betsy FORSHAY:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlough/136.1.1.3/mb.as...

This information enables me to connect David CARLOUGH to the rest of the GERLACH/CARLOCK/CARLOUGH family tree. See the GERLACH report which appears on my home page. Within that report, I show David’s father George CARLOUGH’s lineage as follows. Note that I have not yet found the exact connection between David’s great-grandfather David CARLOUGH who married Margaret MAYSINGER, and this family’s probable immigrant ancestor, Coenraad/Conrad GERLACH/GERLAG/CARLOCK (1660 – ca. 1712) of Hackensack, Bergen Co., NJ. I estimate that two generations are missing between David’s great-grandfather David CARLOUGH and Coenraad/Conrad GERLACH/GERLAG/CARLOCK.

Hi Sue,

Glad I was able to be of help tieing your family together. David apparently served in the Civil War. By doing a general search for him on Ancestry I found him on the 1890 Special Census of Veterans. If you search under Military Records you can find the unit he served with and then look for him in it's history.

I've still got to see his mother's death certificate to tie her to my family.

Hi Sue,

I found the death record for David J. Carlough's 1st wife, Elizabeth (Bessie) NEE Carlough. She died August 27, 1887, Certificate No. 612724 of New York County. Unfortunately the informant gave her father's name as Patrick NEE not the correct name, Thomas. Patrick was her maternal grandfather. Her mother is properly Elizabeth NEE, a daughter of Patrick and Margaret Connors Kinnally.

David J. Carlough died June 28, 1906, Certificate No. 3276 of Bronx County, NY. In his case his father is correctly George Carlough but his mother is entered as Elizabeth HALEY rather than Forshay.

Hi,

Elizabeth Kinnally Nee, mother of Elizabeth (Bessie) Nee Carlough was a sister of my GGGrandfather Patrick and a daughter of Patrick and Margaret Connor Kinnally of Co. Westmeath, Ireland. Patrick Sr., seemingly a widower, sons James, Patrick & John & daughter Ellen Lynch, along with various spouses and children, immigrated to New York City between 1846 and 1850.

I've been researching this family for 20 years and have managed to connect with descendants of the other three. Kathleen Phelps, James' descendant, has notes of her GGmother listing family members. Among them were daughters of Bessie Kinnally Nee - Bridget Murray & 2 children, Bessie Carlo and 1 or 2 children and Nellie Nee.

I only just began seriously searching for the Nee daughters and found the Carlough Board messages. I can't believe a GGGrand daughter of Bessie's happened on the same board so soon after I did.

I've got a wealth of information on the Kinnally Family, a little on the Nee's and a bunch on the Carlough's in the US. You're right - Edward F. Carlough is a nephew of Thomas (named for his maternal grandfather), son of his brother George (named for the paternal one).

I'll send you and E-mail with my E-address. I'm on Long Island, NY. I know Thomas moved to NJ - are you there?

Mary
