Surnames: ZOROJA, ZARAJA
The surname ZOROJA is quite rare, and I would appreciate it you posted scans of any documents that have the name of the town your ancestors came from - sometimes they listed a larger village or a nearby town that was the centre of the area as place of origin.
I wil give you the information on the family of Serbian ethnicity from Croatia border region, but be aware that the surnames Zaraja and Zoroja also appear on the lists of people of Bosnian Jewish descent (sefardi) who had moved to Zagreb after the fall of The Ottoman Empire, so there may be an earlier link there.
I found only several ZOROJA families who lived in clusters in the villages VREBAC, OSTRVICA, PAVLOVAC and KUZMANOVAČA near Široka Kula, in the GOSPIĆ mmunicipality and a few more in GRUBIŠNO POLJE near PAKRAC.
That is consistent with the data about Vrebac where in 1696. there were 40 Serbian (Vallachorum) households, and in 1712. in Vrebac ( Pavlovac included) there were 20 members in the Zoroja family household listed.
The link is to a witness statement about how SAVO ZOROJA from PAVLOVAC VREBAČKI was among the only few who escaped from Jadovno in July 1941. (page 264)
http://www.skdprosvjeta.com/pdf/49.pdfAll these villages are in the Gospić area so look for information there in the municipal office. Try also the regional historical archive in Karlovac.
You can inquire through Serbian Orthodox Church eparchy in Karlovac to which the area belongs about the old vital records but they have none in their possession, all were taken in 1941. and are stored either in Croatian National Archive in Zagreb or the regional archives.
Parishes for the villages mentioned are:
parohija Vrebac,
parohija Ostrvica,
parohija Široka Kula
address:
Eparhija Gornjo-Karlovačka
(Arhijerejsko namjesništvo ličko)
Save Raškaj 14
47 000 Karlovac
kontakt@eparhija-gornjokarlovacka.hrFamily Search has these records available on the microfilms:

The language of the records is listed as (Roman)Serbo-Croatian but that is not true- the records were kept in Old Church Slavonic language and in Cyrillic script ( see the attachement).
If you are going to search Military Krajina archives this area belonged to the Gospić regiment.
Oh and this thread probably belongs to the Croatia board. :)
