Hi....Yes, my relative Andrew, and your relative Robert were brothers. I understand that Robert had like 9 kids...Sarah Anne being one of them...is that right? Robert went to Amaranth Township, and Andrew stayed in Artemsia township. I thought the 3 brothers ( the other one being Thomas)had come out together from Ireland as young men but I am not sure because according to the census it looks like Andrew came over with his wife, Catharine, and their 2 year old, John, (in 1849 )who is my great grandfather...they had two more sons in Canada. I am not sure when Robert and Thomas came over....do you happen to know? Also, what info do you have from their home in Portadown, Ireland?? I imagine you probably have more Hewitt info...but thanks!

Andrew's farm was located right beside Mary Hewitt's farm, Mary being Thomas' (my great grandfather) mother and hence my great great grandmother. My hunch is that since Andrew had an all boy family, Sarah Ann must have spent time on Andrew's farm to help out, and so that is probably how she met Thomas Hewitt, my great grandfather. My Hewitt line comes from the townland of Clonroot in Armagh NI, which is very near to Portadown. The Whittens came from somewhere in Armagh because I was at the Flesherton cemetery where Andrew is buried and his tombstone states that he was a native of Armagh. Robert had a number of children, many of them girls, but I do not have my material in front of me. I have all the names of his children, one of them, William, had a girl named Laurie Liewell Whitten, my grandfather's (James Russel Whitten Hewitt) cousin whom he married later in his life. Do you have the lot numbers for Andrew's farm in Artemesia township ? I do in my material. The only information I have are birth and death certificates, obits which I posted on the web, census material also available on the web. If you have not been to the Dufferin county page here is the link (at the end of post), there are some Whitten obits. Robert Whitten is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Orangeville Ontario, as well as Thomas his brother, and as I stated earler, Andrew in buried in the Flesherton cemetery. You seem to know where they came from in Aramgh as you wrote Portadown. Is this corrrect ? Have you been to Flesherton ? Please keep in touch, and if I think of anything else, I will post here again. __________________ http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onduffer/obituaries/names-...

Thanks so much !!
Robert Alfred Ward Whitten was my grandfather. Catharine was his sister. They also had a brother but he is not mentioned here.

If Robert Alfred Ward Whitten is your grandfather, then we are roughly the same age, I am 55, because my grandfather (James Russell Whitten Hewitt) was born in 1885, and yours 1893, and I notice on December 24th, like me coincidentally. My grandfather was born on a farm just north of Orangeville, not too far from the Robert Whitten farm, because his father (Andrew's neighbour) eventually sold his farm in Artemesia and moved down to Dufferin county in the late 1800s. My grandfather's dad eventually sold that farm and bought what was known as Orchard View farm in the southwestern part of Orangeville which today is built up with housing. One of the streets running through this area was named after my great grandfather - Hewitt Street.

Below is the link to the Whittens of Dufferin county, so you can see my that my information is correct Laurie Liewell. I have a copy of her birth certificate from the Ontario Archives. They lived in Winnipeg for many years with their father William J. You are related to them of course.

I am not sure that she was married before she married my grandfather (his second marriage) or that she had any other children from a previous marriage, I know that my grandfather and her had no children from their marriage, they were cousins anyway. We knew her as Laura.

Another good source of more contemporary information is phone books. I was able to locate the Whittens in Winnepeg using this method.

If you live in Ontario, then you can try the Archives to get birth and death certificates for Andrew Whitten's descendants. I have many birth and death certificates for Robert's descendants. There is also new material coming on the internet every year.

Yes, I am 56.
Thanks for this info ! It is much easier doing my side of the Whittens ( Andrew's), than yours ( Robert's) as we did not have the children that Robert and Robert J had !!! :)
I live in Toronto, and I do know the birth dates and deaths of my direct line. Andrew, wife, and one son are buried in Flesherton, another,my great grandfather, grandfather, and father ( last year) in Toronto, and cant remember at the moment where Andrew's other son is buried...I know when though. Off to look that up. :)
I dont even remember what started me doing this last week. I was checking something re the family and just got going :)
My father has been to Armagh, Ireland and I know they have a picture of the homestead, and the family church there. My Mom cant find Dad's file at the moment but when I do I will send any info on Robert along to you.

All my family research was done over 15 years ago at the Archives when I lived in Toronto.

I have many copies of birth and death certificates for Robert Whitten's descendants.

I have been living in Quebec now for the past 10 years.

You mentioned that your father has been to Armagh and knows which parish the Whittens are from. Since my great grandmother was a Whitten, I would really appreciate if you cold tell me sometime which parish this is. I have been trying desperately to figure out exactly where the Whittens are from in Armagh.

My Hewitts are from the parish of Kilmore and their church is located in the hamlet of Kilmore which is about 2 kilometres northwest of Portadown.

This may help you in determining the date of arrival in Canada of the 3 Whitten brothers. This is the marriage notice for Robert Whitten who got married in what was then York (Toronto). It was at St. James Cathedral, because I have some other data (not in hand) that shows this.

15 March, 1844, by license, Robert WHITTEN, of the township of York, bachelor, and Elizabeth FERGUSON, of the same place, spinster.

Anxiously awaiting information on place of origin of Whitten family in Armagh.

Thanks!
