My tree showed a path from Caleb to Abijah to William to Giles in the Hopkins family. This is a common path seen in many member trees and corresponding hints, but it is considered by the Mayflower folks to be invalid because William was, according to them, unmarried and w/o children. Has anyone else tried to find a valid path from Caleb to Giles? Here is what I was told:
Thank you for your interest in the Mayflower Society. We have received your Preliminary Review Form and have attempted to determine the best previously approved lineage paper in our files that follows your proposed lineage from Mayflower passenger Giles Hopkins. Upon consulting our Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Vol 6: Stephen Hopkins book, we find the following statement on p.8 regarding Giles' son, William:
". . . William was evidently unm. (unmarried) and d.s.p (Died without issue) after 5 March 1688/9; no proof has been found and it appears unlikely that this man was identical with William Hopkins (1660-1718) of Shelter Island NY, who m. Rebecca Havens."
We also checked our lineage files. Our lineage files are consistent with the Mayflower Families book and no one has ever applied for membership in the Mayflower Society through a William Hopkins m. Rebecca Havens.
