Mungoven or Mungovan

My great grandparents Michael and Mary Mungoven or possibly Mungovan came from County Clare, Ireland during the 1850's (I believe.) Descendants lived in Ottumwa, Iowa and Newton, Kansas. I hve never seen this name listed in phone books since the 1950's. Please respond to either Mungoven or Mungovan

Mary Ann~
My ancestors come from County Clare (James Mungovan; b. 1801 in Ennis). The spelling was changed when they came to America in the late 1840s-early 50s. In my town in Southern California, there is a Mungovan as well as me, a Mongoven. In towns in Massachusetts and Illinois, for example, both spellings are fairly common. I used to think it was an extremely rare name. There are lots of us in the U.S., Australia, England, and Ireland. Mungovan, Mongoven, Mongovin, etc. Take care. Jan

Jan, Thanks so much for the information! I need to get the ancestry book back from a daughter so that I can check the dates re when Michael Mungoven immigrated from county Clare. My email is: daldrichdenco@compuserve.com We live "in" Littleton and, yes, we had someone at Columbine this year. Thanks again. MaryAnn

As a fifth generation, Mungovan, I have been doing extensive research for many years on the origination of the Clan Mungovan. This research has taken me to genealogical libraries, cemeteries, and the Internet. Would very much enjoy the exchange of information with other fellow Mungovans, as there are not many of us out there. Thanks

To Barbara Mungovan Koch and others,
Thanks for the messages.
Since this message board does not automatically notify a message originator of a reply to a new message I had quite forgotten that I had set it up.
I therefore apologise to anyone waiting for a reply from me.
I have been collecting all sorts of Mungovan information over the past few years and have already shared it with others as they have with me.
A lot of this information simply can't be put on a notice board.
I am happy to receive emails directly to

Michael Mungovan was my Great Great Grandfather. He was Married to Bridget Mungovan. They were both born somewhere in County Clare, IR. Possible Ennis. They had at least two daughters. Mary Jane (1854- 1931) and Bridget Ann (1856- 1928). Bridget was my Great Grandmother who married James Keenan. Any connection. I think Michael was in Virginia or West VA.

Chris~
Have you any information concerning my g-g-g-grandfather, James Mungovan (b. 1801 in Ennis; d. Nov. 17, in Gillman, Illinois, USA)? James married Catherine Costello (b. 1804 in Ennis; d. June 13, 1850 in L'Erable, Illinois). Children were Dennis (b. 1831), John, Patrick J., Margaret, Catherine, and Bridget). Thanks!
Sincerely, Jan
