Judy-
Emmitt Starr didn't publish those "Cherokee By Blood" books. Volumes 1 through 9 was copied and transcribed by Jerry Wright Jordon from PART (NOT complete) of the microfilm series M-685, rolls 1 through roll 12. That was the "1909 Court of Claims"- the Guion Miller Commission's determinations as to each applicant's eligibility to share in a one-time payment, based on proof that their ancestors were shown on the 1835 Cherokee Henderson Roll.

Dr. Emmitt Starr published three books, but the one that I think you mean was "History of the Cherokee Indians"- first published back on December 12, 1921- in Claremore OK

Jack-
Have you seen the 1140 (eleven-HUNDRED, fourty) page book: "Knox County, Tennessee Marriage Records- 1792-1900", compiled by Roscoe Carlisle d'Armond and Virginia Carlisle d'Armond and published in 1970 by "The Family Records Society- Knoxville, TN"?

I volunteer from time to time at an archival library in Claremore OK. They have that book, but you might want to see if you can get it on Interlibrary Loan from Knoxville.

But on the other hand- this proves that the Cherokees did not inhabit Knox County TN between those two dates. And even before that, Knox County was formed in 1792 of Greene and Hawkins, two other TN counties that had been formed even earlier- and the counties could not be chartered if they contained any Indian lands. That was the law!

Good luck

Jan

James Richard "Dick" Hill. born April 1854 possibly in Louisiana. Lived most of his life in Bibb County, Alabama and married to Fanny. Some family history says he may have gone to Texas for a while in his later years so I do not know if he died in Bibb County, Alabama. Some of his children were Paralee, Effie, Lige or Elijah, Bary, Sam, Charles, Benjamen. I want to find out about this man so badly. I think about him all the time for atleast 10 years.
Thanks for any help,
Diane

I just stumbled upon your post about Betsey Te Ske of cherokee decent, married to John Sutton. My brother-in-law is a decendent of the Sutton family and hasn't been able to find any information on her.
I just wondered if you'd found anything more since you posted this in 2002?
Any help is appreciated,
Lori Cannon
