Dear Maarit
I would love to correspond with you about the Paananen family. I believe that Toivo visited Arvo in Florida in 1991, & our family corresponded with Arvo

Our great grandather was Arvid Paananen, b 1 Nov 1872 in Viitasaari & opened up a general store in Kannonkoski in Kivijarvi. Arvid was the son of Abraham & Kristina Narhi.

Arvid's Cousins John, Ernest & Carl were born in Pihtipudas around 1876-1882. Carl remained in Finland, brothers John & Ernest Immigrated to US. John had 6 kids, including Arvo who settled in Flordia. Ernest lived primarily in Ohio & NY.

I am trying to sort out who John, Ernest & Carl's father was & if their father was Abraham's brother.

Thanks!

Nestor Ernst was one of 6 children of Anders Antti Vilhelm Israelinpoinka Paananen. The others were Huho Vilhelm, Kaarlo Valdemar, Aina Maria And Tyyne Serahvia. There may also be an Oswald.
Anders was married to Leena Maria Johontytar Luomi. I have info about the parents of both Anders and Leena. Anders' father was possibly born in Viitassari, died in Pihtipudas.
I don't know how much you want to know.
How would Arvid be a first cousin of Ernst?
Ernst (Ernest) was my 1st cousin twice removed. You may know that he was a famous musician. I have a CD of his delightful folk music. He went to the U.S. and died there (in New York). His daughter Tuulikki was a famous dancer and actress in Finland. I believe that this family lived in Pihtipudas.

P.S. I regret that this program does not allow for umlauts and such punctuation, so the a with two dots must be imagined.

Dear Paula,

Thank you so much for your very helpful response.

Arvid communicated to his children that he & Ernest were cousins & I'm hoping to find out how they were cousins & if perhaps the fathers of Ernest & Arvid may have been related.

Arvid Paananen b 1 Nov 1872 in Viitasaari, Kivijärvi had musical interests & his daughter b 1900 was a talented violinist. Arvid, his wife & 4 young children immigrated from Kivijarvi to FItchburg MA in the early 1900s

Arvid's parents were Abraham Paananen b 26 Sept 1842 & d 24 March 1905 & Kristina Catharina Narhi b 1 May 1841, d 7 July 1901 Viitasaari.

Abraham died in Huopanan Pitkäaho, Viitassari. We don't know anything about Abraham's parents or his siblings.

I would very much appreciate more info about the parents of Anders Antti Vilhelm Israelinpoinka Paananen & Leena Maria Johontytar Luomi. Also, if you happened to have any information about Anders Annti's siblings, that would be quite helpful, too.

Besides the strong musical connection between Arvid & Ernest & Ernest's brother John (all violinists & able to play other instruments well), Arvid & Ernest's families both have cousins named DJERF & both used the name NESTOR in their family lines.

Thanks so much for your help!

How common is the Paananen surname in Finland? Curious to know if Emma Paananen, who emigrated to Washington, USA, in 1904, is a relative of yours as well?? Family stories tell of a well known violinist in the family....who might that be?

Looking forward to hearing from you!
Amy

Hi, Amy,
I don't know of an Emma Paananen. Ernest Paananen, a famous violinist/composer who was born in Finland and came to the US where he died, is related to me.
There is a mailing list that includes people seeking information about Finnish relatives (among other Finnish topics), and people willing to offer information answering questions. I've gotten help there and the folks are great!
The URL is http://finnishancestors.net
You can sign up for free and post your questions there. I'll bet you'll get help there.
I recommend it.
Happy hunting,
Paula
