Re: More info on Valentine
My grandmother recently passed away and we found a lot of documents pertaining to our family history that we are trying to put together. One Buffalo Polish newspaper obituary we found was for her grandfather, Szymon Gmerek, who died in 1916. He was married to Agnes (Agnieszka) and his kids were Maryanna (my grandma's mother), Helena, Antoni, Franciszka, Franciszek, Stanislaw, Ludwika, Kazimirz, Anna, Klara, Joanna, Cecylia and Ludwika. His brother is listed as Wawrzynice.
Could this be the same Szymon Gmerek you are referring to? Any help would be much appreciated.

Szymon Gmerek/more info on Valentine
Denise: Even though you and I have begun communicating by e-mail, for those other persons checking this message board, I want to note that you and I are definitely tracing the same Szymon Gmerek line. We have also begun sharing some very interesting information on this subject.

Re: More info on Valentine
Hello:
I do not know if anyone who was posting to this forum in 1999 and 2001 is still about doing research, but this last posting caught my attention. As I was reading all the posts I was thinking that I perhaps just had a whole different family of Gmerek(s), but on this last post you mentioned Valentine (Walenty) son of Michal & Mary GMEREK. You mentioned her surname (Mary's I mean) but I can't think of it off the top of my head. Sorry, I should have written it down. Well, I have on my family tree a Valentine GMEREK who was the son of Michael & Mary only the information that I have lists her surname as PITLAK. Does this sound familiar to anyone out there?
I do not have any dates for that generation, but guessing from son, Joseph Edward (who would be Valentine's brother) born in 1864 I would have to say approx. 1830/1840 for the parents Michael and Mary.
I do know that Joseph Edward married Theresa WILINSKI (also spelled WOLANSKY and probably a hundred other variations!) They had at least 9 children. Someone has been doing research on this family as I am seeing LDS Temple work being done in Los Angeles for some of their children. This couple passed away (he in 1932 and she in 1942) in the town of Morann, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.
Joseph Edward and Valentine have two other brothers: Jacob M. who married a woman named Julia and had at least 8 children; and Albert George who married Catherine JASKOWAK and had 8 children. This is NOT my direct line - so please don't be upset with me for not knowing a lot more, but I am willing to help in the research and I am hoping to see if this family is related in some way.
Thanks!

Sorry to take so long responding; my genealogy research has slowed quite a bit the past several years. Your info is interesting, but I don

Re: More info on Valentine
Not quite sure what happened to my last cyberspace response. In any case, several years ago I tried to make a connection between the Buffalo, NY Gmereks and the Clearfield, PA ones but could not. Perhaps there is a very distant connection or just that I missed it. And, yes, I do remember a Valenty or Valentine in PA, but then many of those names were so common. The dates you guess at for Michal and Mary are probably about the same as for my great grandparents, but Mary's name was not Pitlak. Anyway, keep searching and good luck. Also, I think Gmerek means "searcher, fumbler, rummager". I prefer searcher.

Re: More info on Valentine
Jacob M. Gmerek is my great grandfather. He married Josephine Kasubick, for some reason in the census images she is called Julia but I have marriage records, tombstone etc. on her. Also a photo of her and Jacob. Their death record also. Their daughter Emelia is my grandmother. I also have a little more information but nothing concrete into Jacob's parentage. Re: Szymon Gmerek/more info on Valentine
Allyn: What is your relation to Szymon Gmerek? My Grandfather's name is Valentine Gmerek. I have seen Szymon Gmerek quite often in my search. It seems that most of the Gmerek's moved to the St Louis, Missouri area. There are a lot of different spellings of Gmerek. I have seen Gimerek, Gmerek,Gomorock, Gemerek. I found a lot of information when I looked at the information of these people and found that they were related to me. If you think you have any information to share with me, I will be happy to share what I have. ritamclain@charter.net
