Just another clue; I looked at the Mass. Vital Records for births of Joseph and Laura's children in Greenfield. Laura is listed as Lauretta Carme. Interesting clue. I do think Joseph Caramanica/o is related to the John you are looking for.

Also try the Italian forename of Giovanni which is the Italian equivalent of John. Perhaps Joseph and John are brothers?
