I have some data on Boone Helm. He was born in Kentucky in 1828. His family moved to Missouri, where he decided that he wished to go farther west, i.e. to California on his own. A friend promised to go with him, but changed his mind. Boone stabbed his friend to death and was caught by a posse. His behavior in jail prompted the court to put him in a mental hospital. After a relatively short time, he escaped and made his way to California. Boone killed several men there and fled to Canada. The province in which he spent a lot of time was British Columbia. Boone continued to be a lawbreaker. Several times he came back from wilderness trips and his companion would be missing. He always made some excuse, on one occasion claiming that the man with him had committed suicide. Boone had eaten several men who had been with him.
Boone was sentenced to death in British Columbia. He escaped and went back across the border into the U.S. It was there that he linked up with several other lawbreakers. They were caught and hung near Virginia City, Montana.
