I have been told that the area called Crosshill was founded by people from Scotland, after an area in Ayrshire, Scotland

If anyone happens to have a book for this area could they please do a lookup and tell me if the Surname of Hastings is mentioned and anything it may happen to say regarding them.

I am tracing a David Hastings from Scotland who married Mary Gotby from England

Also a William Hastings from Scotland who married Deborah Glaister from England

Thank you

What exactly are you looking for? David & William are mentioned in the 1871 census (I can access the earlier census but the 1871 index is on line). The cemetery near Crosshill lists eight Hastings including a William & Debra. There is a history of Wellesley - The Maple Leaf Journal which if memory serves correctly is in my local library. The Region of Waterloo website has a short history on Wellesly & if you look at mapquest, the road out of Crosshill to Millbank (look up Millbank, not Crosshill) is called the William Hastings Line.

Oh, by the way, the Wellesley Apple Butter festival is coming up in Sept. should you wish to visit.

Cheers, John

I'm looking for any information on David and William Hastings, I know they both came from Scotland, however on their death registrations parents were not listed.

I am assuming they were brothers.

I can't find marriage registrations for either of them.

If there happens to be information in a history book that might say anything about them it would be helpful to place them in the family tree that I am working on.

I have the information from the Ontario, Canada Census Index, 1871 Record but it only lists David Hastings and William Hastings, there is no family listed for them.

I would like to know if they are in the 1851 and 1861 census and if they are listed with families.

The earliest census I have access to the 1881 census that shows David with wife Mary Gotby and two children. David died in 1908.

William died abt 1876 (I forgot to check prior to writing this), his wife Debrah Galister is listed in the 1881 census with 8 children.

Both 1881 census' record their surname as HARDINGS

I am aware of the William Hastings Line, there is also a road called Glaister Line and another called Ayrshire. Crosshill was named after Crosshill in Ayrshire, scotland

Apparently there is also a Hastings Belmont Heritage House 1861 that I can't find any information on either.

I'd appreciate any help if and when you have time to do so.

Thank you..........Susan

I have a copy of the Maple Leaf Journal. There is a pic on pg 62 entitled "The Royal Family of Crosshill" -the Wm Hastings family and their touring automobile c1918 . Courtesy of Mrs. John Hastings. There are two girls .

In 1864 , the village of Crosshill which, according to records, was established in 1846, was a larger settlement than it is today. Credit is given in the records to William and David Hastings and Hugh Hutchison as being the first settlers in Crosshill. Among others arriving early on, were the Glaister family, consisting of a mother and her four sons, as well as George Hewitt and Messrs. Campbell, Godby and Forwell. There is more. Crosshill to-day is a bedroom community.

There is a lot more about the Hastings esp. towards the end of the book with even an 1873 picture of William & Deborah. It would certainly be worth getting a copy though I'm not sure where. It is the Maple Leaf Journal, A Settlement History of Wellesley Township published by the Township of Wellesley, 1983.

I will email you directly scanned copies of the appropriate pages.

Cheers, John
