Hi majseventh:
My brother-in-law who grew up in Plymouth remembers a Charlie and Annie
Devore that had a gas station on Hwy 16 (Plymouth to Sacramento). It was about eight miles west of Plymouth - further west than
Waits Station which is on google maps but not as far west as the Ione Rd that intersects Hwy 16. They also lived in the station building. It is no longer a gas station but there is still a residence there. He remarked that a daughter or granddaughter of the DeVores has built a home on the hill
across the road from the former station. This would be
considered Plymouth area - not Ione. It is probably same distance to Ione as to Plymouth, though. On the 1930 census there is:
1930 census of township 5 of Plymouth which is the
Willow Springs area west of town:
Charles G
Devore Head 65 Owns
Annie L
Devore Wife 55
Elmer
Devore Son ab 20
Edward P
Mummert Lodger & employee 28
Charles
Devore had a radio set, lived on a farm, 36 age when married, could read & write, b in CA, father b OH, mother b IL, was farm laborer on a stock farm. Note that his son had 'ab' inserted after his name so may have meant that he was absent at college. The son has attended school or college in the last year.
Annie was b in CA, father b in
Irish Free State, mother b in NY.
There was a Hotel
Devore in Plymouth which burned down in
the early 1930s. I walked to Plymouth
Grammar school (1939 - 1947) every day through the front porch of the hotel since it covered the sidewalk - the only part that was still standing. It abutted the existing city park. It has since been torn down completely. I am attaching a photo of the hotel.
Regards,
Nan
