I wanted to state how right you are about the coat of arms. There is a direct family that owns the rights to each one. Therefore those who actually use coats of arms that they are not intitled too, nor do they have permission of the use can face some pretty bad penaties should the family who owns the rights want to pursue in that manner.
I learned of this through my genealogy professor when I took classes at the college. It was his Aunt who owned the rights to his coat of arms and she faught on the use of it within his family. So the right stayed with the Aunt and only she could state whom used it by written permission.
