I believe that John Gyde, a clothier who died in Painswick in 1797 is my great-great-great-great grandfather. Most sources I've seen put his date of birth at 1744. However, there is a John Gyde. clothier who died in 1797, buried in Painswick Churchyard. The inscription on his grave gives his age at 65, putting his birth at 1732. If this is true, then Hannah Bubb (born 1718) who I believe was his mother (she married William Gyde, born 1715) wouldn't have been of child-bearing age when John was born. Can anyone help please?

Hello.

After searching for Gyde on Google I came across your request. I am also researching my ancestors and think I might have some useful information for you. I believe that my Great Great Great Great Grandfather (James Gyde b.1755) is the brother of the John Gyde you're referring to.

The information we have suggests that John Gyde was born in 1744. He was the 3rd child of William Gyde (b. 1715) & Hannah Bubb (b.1718) who married in Glourcester on June 11th 1739.

This shows Hannah Bubb married at the age of 21 and was 26 when she had John. John died in 1798 which makes him 54 not 65 so some where there is an error of 11-12 years.

John married Sarah Hogg (b.1747) in 1771 and had 9 children.

We have more information following your family line but would need your family name to make the relevant connections.

It was my Great Grandmother who was Ann Gyde coming down from James Gyde (broher to John), her Great Grandfather.

I Look forward to your reply.

Kind Regards,
Lynne Wall

Hi Lynne

Thanks for your reply. This confirms what other people have told me about John Gyde, but I'm still puzzled as to why there should be such a big gap between the age calculated fron his birth date of 1744, and the age given on his tombstone. John is buried with his son Daniel and Daniel's wife Elizabeth (nee Ravenhill?). Does this agree with your research?

As well as John and James, my research shows that William Gyde and Hannah Bubb had 7 other children called William, Mary, Thomas, Daniel, Samuel, Hannah, and Elizbeth.

John Gyde (d.1797) was my great (x4) grandfather. He and Sarah Hogg had 9 children. Of these Samuel Gyde was my great (x3) grandfather. His first wife was Susannah Cook who had 4 children - of these Thomas Gyde was my great-great grandfather.

Your great(x4)grandfather married Elizabeth Walker. One of their sons Charles Gyde was the father of Frederick and Edwin Gyde who both left their fortunes to the village of Painswick where I grew up. James' & Elizabeth's other childen were Elizabeth and Thomas, so I assume you are descended from one of these?

Any more info you might have would be of interest to me.

Best wishes
Graham Gyde

Hi
Yes Anne Gyde's parents were Charles Gyde & Harriet Burnell of Pitchcombe. Anne was born in 1852 and married Frank Harris in 1877.

My family was a different branch from Painswick. My grandparents were Thomas & Ethel Gyde.

Best wishes
Graham

Hi
My great grandfather is Charles Henry GYDE who married Ellen WINTLE in 1875. Annie is Charles sister. Presumably you are descended from Florence HARR1S and William CANDY who married in 1913. I have some bits of info about the HARRIS family which might interest you
best regards

I am finishing up research that I've continued to collect from my aunt's notes. Would you mind looking over some of it to verify the information? I am descended from James and Elizabeth (Walker) Gyde's son Richard's line. I visited Painswick in 2000 and hope to visit the area again in the near future. I was born in Michigan and now live in Hawaii with my husband, three children and four grandchildren. Sincerely, Suzanne Bell

Hi Suzanne. I'd be happy to look over any information you have and verify what I can.

James Gyde was a brother to my great-great-great-great grandfather John Gyde.

What is the easiest way for you to get information to me?

Look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
