Dear Christine,
Please see my "Brown History & Lineage" posted on Tara Fields' Camden County, GA Web site at:
www.camdencounty.org.
Since that posting, I have done more research on EZEKIEL BROWN and his family, but for this purpose, I will extract a bit from my notes & from my (revised) Brown book:
HUGH BROWN JUNIOR (also HUGH BROWN II), was born 19 July 1788 in Camden Co., GA, about three years after his parents moved from the St. Johns River area in East FL (end of British Period & very beginning of the Second Spanish Period). He was the son of HUGH BROWN SENIOR of VA & SARAH (maiden name unknown).
NOTE: There were four children (hijos=plural form) listed in the family of HUGH BROWN SR. & his (unnamed) wife on the 1784 EAST FL SPANISH CENSUS (taken in the summer of 1784). It is impossible to determine whether or not these children were males, females or a combination of both, making it difficult to ascertain genuine brothers & sisters of HUGH BROWN JR.
There have been no records found which absolutely confirm the siblings affiliated with HUGH BROWN JUNIOR. Others have listed <possible> siblings linked to him:
1. EZEKIAL/EZEKIEL BROWN, Was in CCG in 1820 (marr. record); ages on CCG census schedules: 1850 age 63, 1860 age 75, 1870 age 88; on all - born in VA. EZEKIEL BROWN bur. Temple Cemetery in CCG; birth date is 1784; death date is 04 Aug. 1871. All of these dates show that this EZEKIEL BROWN was a few years older than HUGH BROWN JR.
EZEKIEL BROWN marr. 1st SARAH BANDY on 05 Oct. 1820 (CCG Marr. Bk. A 1819-1831 p. 28 - I have a copy of the original); at least 4 kids; no definitive birth or death dates for her; she possibly died in or aft. 1834. He marr. 2nd SARA NORTON (no marr. dates); at least 2 kids; she was born ca. 1810 (in SC or in GA, records say both!) & died 1885 bur. Temple Cem. CCG.
(More sources for EZEKIEL BROWN: "Camden's Challenge-A History Of CCG," comp. by Marguerite Godley Reddick, 1st ed. 1976 & 2nd ed. 1994; Census Schedules; CCG Court Records; Tax Digests; CCG Marriage Lists comp. by Larry Durbin & one done by Bobbie Whittington, plus original copies from CCG Probate Records.; CCG Death Index comp. by Larry Durbin; BROWN family file folders at the Atlanta Archives, at the Huxford Genealogical Library, Homerville, GA & at the Bryan-Lang Historical Library in Woodbine, GA).
Children of EZEKIAL BROWN:
1. EDWIN A. BROWN b. 25 Mar. 1823 m. ELIZA/ELIZABETH A. HADDOCK 09 Feb. 1847-at least 6 kids.
2. ELIZABETH BROWN b. ca. 1829 m. ISAAC TUCKER 02 May 1850-kids?
3. GEORGE J. BROWN b. ca. 1832/1833 m. MARY J. BRAZILL 24 Dec. 1851-at least 10 kids.
4. AUGUSTUS B. BROWN b. ca. 1834/1835 m. MARIA L. McKENDREE prior to 1860- at least 11 kids.
5. SARAH J. BROWN b. ca. 1842/1843.
6. CRAWFORD BROWN b. 09 May 1846; d. 19 Apr. 1910; m. LYDIA CAROLINE RAND/LYDIA A. RHAN/RAHN 17 Dec. 1865-at least 10 kids.
The descendants of EZEKIEL BROWN settled the small community called Browntown in Camden County. They are listed in "Camden's Challenge."
Notes of Lucile Bruce Brown & James T. Goodbread (both sets of notes in Bryan-Lang Hist. Lib.) propose that this may be a brother of HUGH BROWN JR. One could equally presume that he may have been (and more likely was) a cousin or another (lateral) relative.
Records indicate that the HUGH BROWN SENIOR family moved to Camden County from East Florida in the year 1785.
2. DAVID BROWN - Born 30 Aug. 1790 in Camden Co., GA; marr. in 1815 to ELIZABETH ATKINSON. She was born 10 May 1795, dau. of BURWELL ATKINSON & ANN FELDER. He died 28 Dec. 1869 & she died 15 May 1878; both bur. at Homeward Cemetery west of Waverly on Waverly/Atkinson Highway in CCG.
NOTE: The only source possibly confirming that HUGH BROWN JR. had at least one brother, DAVID BROWN, is in "Pen Portraits" p. 44, placed under the section written by Maddie Brown Clark entitled "A Romance In Camden County," a narrative by Mrs. G. V. Baker of White Oak, GA, as told to her by an elderly gentleman who was a former slave: "Over a hundred years ago, there lived in Camden County two brothers, David and Hugh Brown ... David was engaged to Miss Deen [sic] and Hugh to a Miss Atkinson. Miss Deen went away on a little visit and David was to go for her and bring her home. Something prevented and he could not go, so he asked Hugh to go. He gladly consented. The miles were long and horses were slow in the horse and buggy days, so there was much courting done ... Hugh fell desperately in love with Miss Deen, his brother's sweetheart. Arriving at home, he told what happened. David said, 'We will exchange, if it will be all right with Miss Atkinson.' Seeing her, the exchange was made. Hugh would marry Miss Deen, David, Miss Atkinson."
Unfortunately, records in Camden County are not conclusively definitive regarding many of the early BROWN family interrelationships. And, the earliest record I have listing HUGH BROWN (SENIOR), is the deed (survey 1767) showing the land he inherited in SC upon the death of his father, ROBERT BROWN in 1774. This document does not list any other children for ROBERT BROWN (Charleston, SC Courthouse Records, Deed Bk. A-6, p. 365-367). CCG Letters of Administration on the Estate of HUGH BROWN SENIOR in 1812 named SARAH BROWN & HUGH BROWN JUNIOR "On their complying with the requests of the Law, by giving Bond." There is no evidence that a Will for HUGH BROWN SENIOR was filed, and, no other children (nor relatives) of HUGH BROWN SENIOR were mentioned in any Camden County, GA records.
Sincerely, Marguerite M. Mathews
