Thanks for the info regarding the crests and arms being granted to a single person, that is very interesting.

Yes, I am trying to find out the origin of the platter, but the only distinguishing feature is the crest. As I've said before, my interest lies in the surname. As the platter is obviously very old, it would be fascinating to trace the history of how it travelled from the UK (I assume) and ended up in a job lot in South Africa.

Will see if I can get hold of a high quality photo of the platter. May I post it here, or would that enquiry belong in another area on the forum?
