Theresa,
I really appreciate all this information! I don't believe I was clear on my original posting. George was an older black man who lived with my great-great grandparents in Adair County, KY. No one can ever remember a time he didn't live with a member of the family. I'm trying to figure out how it is he came to live with them. I have no direct link to the Johnston/Johnson family line.
My great-grandmother, Hallie Pearl Pickett, a white woman, recalled George all the time. She shared stories of their special times together during her childhood. He was just another member of the family to my Pickett relatives. I'm writing my family history and don't feel I would do them justice without including "Uncle George".
I've located one black male slave living with Charles Lewis Pickett (recorded as Chas Pickel) in the 1830 Adair County census. The slaves age isn't given. Charles and family migrated to Adair County from Virginia. I'm beginning to wonder if this slave traveled with them. George could very well be a descendant of this male slave. According to the 1920 census, George was born around 1875.
The shortcut to the African-American site was helpful. You're right. There really is a great amount of information there. May I ask where you got the slave owners and slave names from? I'd be interested in locating slaves for Pickett and Wilcoxson lines in both Green and Adair Counties in KY. I know that George lived with both families...they are both my lines.
Sincerely,
Sonya
