I am 63 now. I did my search in 1991 and was extremely lucky once I got my adoption file with my mother maiden name. It also gave the city of her birth as Minneapolis, Minnesota so I called information for the Thireaux name. There was no Thireaux listed but there was a Thereaux listed. This threw me a curve so I looked for the Thireaux name in other French Canadian areas of the country. I even did some research at the Latter Day Saint's family reasearch center. I seemed to be stymied so I decided to try the Theroux listing in Minneapolis and see what happened. A man answered the phone and I told him I was looking for a Lorrain Marie Thireaux and asked if he knew who she might be. He replied, "that's my aunt, why?"
I was stunned at my shear luck but I quickly told him that I had been born in Washington, D.C. in 1942 and my mother's maiden name is Lorraine Marie Thireaux and I wanted to find her if possible. He told me to call him back in about a week and hung up the phone. This put me on pins and needles the whole time but when I called him back he gave me my mother's then current phone number. I called her and it turned out she was indeed my mother and that I had 2 sisters and families I never knew about. I found out later that the man I talked to was Mike, my cousin and he never knew about me so he needed to talk to someone first to find out if I was legit or not. He talked an aunt who knew all about my adoption and she told him it was allright to tell me.
If it were me I would try calling Hoffman families in various parts of South Carolina and see if they know of Juanita Hoffman from the time frame as your mother. You need to specify the time frame to screen out younger or older Juanita Hoffman's.
