I suggest you use the correct Hungarian spelling when searching for names - that may help. Elisabeth is officially spelled as Erzsébet and George is György. The city is Kolozsvár. Mandula (i. e., 'almond') is very rare - is it exectly what you are looking for?

Suggestion to correct spelling of "Chantos"

I have the feeling that "Chantos" is correctly spelled as "Csontos" (and pronounced as 'chontosh'. Could that be so? That would make your search easier... Regards, Karoly (Charles) Lazar

from NY

This has nothing to do with your message. I believe some time ago you emailed me concerning something I posted. You seem very knowledgeable and this is why I decided to write. I've almost given up trying to find out any info on my LaZar lineage, being an amateur at it and right off the bat, my lineage is another country. My questions are: My father's father is Stephen LaZar which was born in Debrecen Hungary. Do you know the correct hungarian spelling for this. Also, do you have any suggestions on how to start finding out any info from Hungary. I do know some info handed down to me from my father, have some newspaper clippings when my grandfather stowed away during WWI and came to Chicago, IL to be with his family and was in fear of being deported back. How my ggrandfather would send him 1st class if this was the case, blah, blah, blah. But have never been able to find out anything from Hungary. From the newspaper clippings and because this is what he also told my father, they were Baron's in Hungary, supposedly kin (either by his mother or father?) to King Josef. However, can't seem to find ANYTHING because of it being in another country - or maybe I know don't know how or where to find it. Sorry to keep rambling on, thank you for any help you are able to give.

Apparently, there were numerous noble Lázár and Lazár families (the diacritics above the "a" letters are very important in Hungary, making these essentially different vocals from the ones writeen without the accent). One Lázár family were even counts.

You may want to search at http://www.arcanum.hu/gesta/ but you need a Hungarian speaker to interpret what you'll find there. My own Hungarian is unfortunately limited to some guessing.

Debrecen was a large city, with multiple parishes of several religions. LDS has films of the records, but you might be in for a long search. Nevertheless, unless you hit luck, you must first establish your own line if you want to have any chance to connect to any of the noble lines.

Thank you so much for your reply. I have off an on for about 10 years tried to obtain information on my father's family. I just get so frustrated then quit. I'm getting an interest again, but want to get somewhere with it. I of course know a lot (what all was told to my dad - which of course has never been proven) and know a lot of my grandfather's years here in the state's. However, it eventually leds back to Hungary then I get disappointed because I can never get anywhere. Anyway, thank you again for your help.
