I think I may have found your family, although Thomas was shown as married to Winifred. See what you think.

1851 census Ashcott, Somerset
Thomas Durston 50, widower
Elizabeth 21
Sidney 12
Thomas Durston, 78, widower (father)

1841 census Ashcott
(in 1841 census ages were often rounded to nearest 5 years)
Thomas Durston 35
Winifred 30
Sarah 15, George 7, Sidney 2
Daughter Sarah, 12, appeared to be a domestic servant.

Also on the 1841 census Ashcott:
Thomas Durston 65
Rachel 65
possibly Thomas's parents

Are you certain of Eliz Hayes? It seems unlikely that another family would have the same children's names and ages.

Let me know if I can provide any other info.
Margaret

Hi Margaret,

Thanks very much for that and yes you are right it is Winifred, not Elizabeth, which will teach me to proof read before I post! Eliz was of course her daughter, and son Sidney married an Eliz so I think I managed to get myself very confused!

Thanks Brian,

Much appreciated, every little snippet helps, seems curious though that Thomas is shown at 84 on his burial record, but father Thomas married Rachel in 1799 which leads me to think that maybe Rachel was his second marraige. Has given me more to work with so thanks very much!

Renee, would your Thomas and Winifred DURSTON be related to a Florence DURSTON, Vincent DURSTON, or Alfrod DURSTON? Florence was 17 living in East Brent, Somerset on the 1891 census or a Vincent DURSTON. Vincent 30 was in Barringto, Albridge, Somerset on the 1881 census. Alfrod DURSTON 30 was in Catcott, Somerset on the 1851 census. These Durstons may be related to my KERTON family line. Wayne

Thanks Debbie, I will look further into these names, as they may be either cousins or siblings of Thomas.

Wayne, I'm sorry but those names don't come up anywhere in Thomas's family that I can find.

Hi craig, my name is Debbie McKay and I'm transcibing for FreeCEN the 1841 Census for Hundred of Whitley (which includes Ashcott). There are many Durstons in Aschott at the time of the 1841 Census including a Thomas DURSTON aged 35 Agricultural labourer, with Winifred (30), Sarah (15), George (7), and Sidney (2). If this is your guy or you want more info on the other Durstons in Ashcott, I'd be more than happy to look them up for you.

Hi Craig,

Yes my Sidney Thomas And Elizabeth are the ones that came to Australia, but I can be of no help with any of the other names. I'm just curious though, you say that you think that all of thomas and winifreds children came to Australia, are you referring to Charles, George and Sarah-ann that came at the same time as Sidney & Elizabeth?

Hi Craig,

Its ok, nobody tends to make sense at 4am :P

It gets quite confusing even in the middle of the day, my durstons had a bad habit of using the same names an awful lot! Thomas and Winifred had children named George, Elizabeth, Sarah-ann, Charles & Sidney. Sidney married an Elizabeth and had children called George, Charles & Sarah-ann. I have read through some of your other posts and I can see that you have done a lot more research into the durstons than I have yet, so you probably already knew all of that!

We are still Durstons - or rather I became a durston when I married my husband - and with a high male to female birth ratio, the durston name is not going to fade away anytime soon.

If there is anything I can help with don't hesitate to ask.

Renee

Hi Craig, Could you please confirm Julia Hoopers's parents please.I can only find a Baptism for a Julian Hooper 14/9/1817 Catcott which I thought must have been son to William Hooper and Joan (nee Grant) Could have been a mistake on part of Vicar but definitely an n. Unfortunately it does not say son or daughter. I did find marr. of Julia to James Rouse Durston and if indeed she is dau. of William and Joan, Julia would be sister of my Grt.Grt.Grandmother Charlotte. Regards Syljun

Hi Craig. Yes I have them as sisters. At the moment you are ahead of me as my interest was of course Charlotte Hooper but have been making notes of relevant families in Catcott.
Sarah Durston's parents are James Durston and Sarah Jeans.
John Grants parents Benjamin Grant and Betty. Still to verify maiden name of Betty.
If you would like you can get in touch via e-mail address as we seem to be researching same lines.Regards, Syljun
Would like names of ten children if you have them please.
